Re: Ocean Way Studios Plug-In.

If I had to give up all but one of my UAD plug-ins... well, first, I'd refuse, but we're just being hypothetical here, so what the heck!
Ocean Way Studios makes changes to tracks that no other plugin I've heard can do. It is not always the right change, you can make sonic magic, or sonic garbage. When it works it is almost magic.
I never worked in the Ocean Ways studios, so I do not know what they sound like. Thus I can not say that the plug-in is accurate. What I can say is that selecting different microphones, and moving them around creates an aural image that is very pleasing. I'd say it sounds natural, in that sense that it sounds like the track was recorded in a nice room.
A couple of caveats...
First, as brilliant as re-mic mode is (and that's what I was describing above), the reverb mode is much more limited. Possibly I just haven't figured it out, but whatever the case, I use re-mic mode unless I'm just dinking around. I do seem to be somewhat alone in this opinion.
Second, and others have commented on this as well, re-mic mode works a lot better (or is easier to use?) with tracks you've recorded yourself. It takes quite a bit of patience to get it to sound good on sampled instruments. Which makes no sense, and yet there it is.
Now recently I picked up Cinematic Strings 2 (and really wish I'd bought it a year ago!) and for some reason I found it much easier to place those strings in OWS. I started with their Room A Strings preset and didn't do a lot of tweaking after that.
Chris Hein Horns Pro Compact (that's a mouthful!) took me forever to match to OWS. It was worth the effort, but I do wish it had been easier (of course the biggest difference - ignoring that it is brass & winds vs strings, and two different developers - is that I had a deadline when I was working with CHH<G>).
Anyway - OWS is a brilliant plug-in that can do a wonderful job of placing a track, and even a sample library track, in a very nice sounding space. It will not replace a reverb, but it adds some ambiance that is aurally pleasing.
You will almost certainly still want to add reverb - I've found that OWS should proceed any reverb, and that algo or convo doesn't seem to matter, and that plates and chambers seem to compliment OWS nicely. Although if you are going for EFFECT you can use almost anything<G>!
Have fun!

A big fat +1 for what Bill had to say. OWS is one of my very favorite plugins -- nothing else that I've tried can match it. By default, I have it on my drum bus, and it nearly always stays there. Great on guitars, keys, and some vocals too. For those so equipped, this is a great time to splurge for one of the awesome UAD reverb plugs -- all are at or near their lowest prices ever this month. Cheers, Eddie

Ocean Way is an excellent plug for certain. I agree with all Bill's (WST3) comments above. Just to add to his comments. Recording through the re-mic mode works well for laying down new tracks as he mentions. It is very easy to do so and very little tweaking needed. All the Room and Instrument presets are quite awesome, I use it tracking through my Apollo (Unison) for guitar, vocals, piano, etc... when recording my own tracks (no samples). It does work best for this application when in Re-Mic mode. I do tend to use the Reverb mode only when running certain sampled instruments through it. I am not sure why this is but suspect that the Re-Mic mode doesn't sound good, or requires a lot of tweaking, because the samples are already captured in their own space. For example, when running NI Session Strings through the Re-Mic mode, the result is not great unless you really tweak with it. I think this is because these Strings are already "in a space" and you are essentially putting them in a space within a space. Even when turning off the Reverb in Session Strings, the result is not great without tweaking. Running Session Strings through OWS Reverb Mode yields an excellent result. On the flip side, when recording strings from my Yamaha Motif-ES without any reverb on it, through the OWS Re-mic mode, it sounds great. Here are some links of OWS in action in Re-Mic mode. Reverb Mode in OWS is simply a reverb like any other. Re-Mic mode puts you in Ocean Way Studios and you pick your OWS microphone and distance from your instrument. I'm going to save mu pennies and buy a UAD interface, even if I have to go Apple for my DAW. I'm sure it's not without it's problems but it appears to be much higher quality.

No need to go Apple to use a UAD interface, bud. PC-compatible Apollo Twins are coming soon, in addition to the existing rack-mounted options. Of course, you can always just get a PCI card or external DSP box in order to run the plugins, and keep whatever interface you have. Cheers, Eddie

Thanks for that info Eddie, that will save a little coin.
