Probably there are even better movies out there. The Academy Awards usually makes me aware of them. The best movie I saw this year though is: The Martian Others that were quite good: Inside Out Black Mass Mr. Holmes No Escape

This thread just made me realize that I hadn't seen any truly remarkable movies this year. Mad Max, Ex-machina, both enjoyable but not remarkable. Inside Out, I guess, would top the list at #1. My granddaughter and I both liked it, but was no Wall-E. Best thing I've seen all year wasn't a movie, but a Netflix TV series called Sense8.

Hi, Haven't seen any ... don't feel comfortable driving at night and it restricts my ability to see many of these things when they come out. BTW, if any of you ever has a chance, my website now has over 325 films reviewed and I have 100 more to upload. Most are on the foreign side of things, but the "Others" is where you will find most of them. Still have the Spanish and the US left to finish. After that I'll work on a better organization for them.

I must admit this topic has left me feeling like many of you did with my "Favourite Albums of 2015" thread. I really don't recall watching any movies, let alone ones i would nominate as "best". I don't fly long distance any more which was the place where I would watch a film. Now I quite often enjoy a film once I resolve to sit down and watch one, but I seldom do. Last film I recall really enjoying was "The trip to Italy" with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, but that was 2014.

bitflipper Best thing I've seen all year wasn't a movie, but a Netflix TV series called Sense8.
Just started watching this series this morning. I shall see how it pans out, but good suggestion nonetheless. Sidenote using what IMDB.com calls 'goofs': Occasionally I notice these inaccuracies in movies. "Sense8" Episode-1 has one that Chicago locals might notice. There is a Chicago policeman character in this series and they just picked up a young man who has been shot in the stomach. All indication is that this is the south Chicago area (referred to as 'Chi-Raq' at one point in the episode). They drive him to the emergency room at where I have to assume is some local hospital because the kid is rapidly on his way to meet his maker. After that drop-off, they are then at Superdawg hot-dog drive-in that is located in northwest Chicago area about 45-minutes away from the area they were originally in. Then after eating they are back in the original south location. Superdawg must be a favorite of the director. Actually it is a well-known place. Note: This doesn't take away from the series at all.

RE: locale inaccuracies...nearly every movie that ever took place in Seattle was shot in Vancouver. They just grab a few seconds of the Space Needle as they pass by on I-5 heading north. The last movie actually filmed in Seattle was that classic masterpiece Harry and the Hendersons - I know because I was stuck in the traffic jam they caused. Go back to Vancouver! My favorite example of Vancouver standing in for someplace else: Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx.

My 'olpal Tim just wrote a song with the word 'revenant' in it. I had to ask him what it meant, never heard it before, now here's a movie with it as the title.

I started reading The Martian last summer and lost interest. At first it was moderately engaging, reading about how somebody might grow potatoes in their own feces, but by the halfway mark it had become repetitive. But all these votes for the film have convinced me to revisit the novel on the promise that it must get better toward the end.

Here's my "morning after" analogy of Star Wars. Was there ever have a song that you loved and then you heard some some young upstart had covered it and you were sure you were going to not like or even hate it (or simply think it was not relevant)? Then you listened and you thought how amazing it was that it was made more modern without losing any of the original flair and flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
