Recording from Roland M-400 Mixer

I am new to using Sonar Artist and I am trying to record from a Roland M-400 mixer. I have the ethernet cable going to the PC from the split out. I have the REAC drivers loaded and all that is OK. I get some sort of signals to Sonar, but not always. 
- Should I be able to monitor the audio being recorded while it is being recorded? Usually I am only able to hear on playback, but
  not while recording. 
- I have the REAC Driver Control Panel set to "Freewheel" since I am not using any kind of sync connections. Is this correct?
- I am having issues knowing what channel on the mixer is going where on Sonar? Any straightforward advice on setting that up?
