Strange problem after switching sound card...

I have changed my sound card for a while (until I can buy the card I have my eyes on) to an Focusrite Scarlett 2i4.

Nothing out of the ordinary right? Well - when I start up an older project that was using the older sound card I get a warning that my master bus is connected to silent outputs until I re-assign them. Fair enough.

However.. When I click "OK" the same window pops up before I can do anything. Every time I click "OK" the window pops up again, and again, and again... I can do nothing with Sonar, because that window keeps stealing focus. I have to go to the task manger to end Sonar, because I even can't access any menu or whatever...

In short - I cannot longer start that project, because when I do I get this endless "silent hardware" loop, without a possibility to get out of it.

So - has anyone had the same problem? And if so, what can be done to "save" the project?

It is possible to suppress the warning messages. Set WarnSilentBuses to 0 in Preferences > File > Initialization File. To see "Initialization File" make sure the Advanced radio button is selected at the bottom of the Preferences dialog.

Make sure you removed your old sound card driver.
Disable any on board audio for now through bios....

And try to just have the new card working alone....

Then retry to open sonar....then go into the preferences, and re select a different audio driver like wmd....
hit apply, then do a second re select to the card driver you just installed.

See if that helps reset things for you...without the looping madness I witnessed the other day.

    Best wishes.

Not sure about ini files or inf...for sonar....Someone who knows Sonar's Prog /Baker should say if it needs be deleted ...As I do not know what Sonar does with this file completely....

And the loop cannot be broken until you break the tie to what ever driver it is looking for, or mis mapping to.
I think it is a MS issue though/...

Nice, Steve. I did not know that. I get the "missing hardware message" on some of my old projects. No biggie, but cool to know how to avoid it. Thanks.

In this case, renaming Aud.ini might help. It is in the user directory "%appData%\Cakewalk" in a SONAR version specific folder.

Thanks scook....what does this ini file do?...in terms of Sonar functioning or function, so I feel at ease about deleting it?..or ..as you imply to renaming it?

Sets up audio interface parameters and a bunch of other stuff. It is rebuilt when SONAR starts if one is not found. Details about all three ini files are http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=INI_Files.1.html

I prefer to rename it instead of deleting it outright just to have something to refer back to if I tweaked a parameter in the old version.

Great learning from this info...Thanks scook...Seems the loop issue stops one from getting into any preferences in sonar...So we have to break the loop first...other wise Sonar is useless , as it will not stop looping in that trying to find audio or silent...blah blah...

Hope this helps the original poster solve for....and others...if so needed.

    Thanks to all.
    Now more reading!

You know it is possible to launch SONAR without a project, right?

I tried that also...as it was Realtech on board audio default for MS win 10, was buggering up my audio interface with personus 828x...So no matter what I opened or tried with Sonar...No audio was playing back....and if it did...it was in another DAW.

Just letting you know, it is possible to use other daws without issues....why?...not sure about that...but reading is good.

WInk....even after breaking the loop madness...I had to de select asio, apply, and re select it back...to rid the no control over sliders and mute and solo or volume control....yet the file plays...with no control...and the play and stop work...yet the mixer and such is not controlling anything of that project....weird sh^...But there it is.

I doubt this has anything to do with the OP.

Re: Strange problem after switching sound card... 2015/12/31 13:20:30 (permalink)
Yes it does..it has to do with everyone using MS Windows and on board audio play back as default...When they get the corruption...if they get it...and this one has some of it....totally and in regards to....endless looping of no audio or silent audio not being found....Could also manifest when changing devices for audio but reg entries are tied or bound to redirects?...
Also driver conflicts...perhaps...And Sonar ini or audio ini or other not refreshing....perhaps?./// or ..MS new direct x and audio handling..in defaults, or control panel not refreshing?.

Mixed up buses..or inputs  and out puts not assigned correctly by default/clashing dirviers/or updated drivers of change....Seems all tied to a consistent, yet dispersed telling..of glitches and weird behavior....((I call bugs))...But I may be wrong in that worded truth.

Yet it is not Sonar per say...OP surely has to try...and say...If I posted about this looping first, on another post, trying to help, and yet bring attention to.... before this posting....who is OP?

    Ah reading is Good!

Thanks for saying...I know I am pushing other issues...but...they have been with me for a long time...and others...and still it seems in the new build....more so continued.

Nothing original in posting audio problems...has been done since the PC conception with midi and audio...wonder why no more?

Sorry for the odd attitude....just look at my avatar and you will understand my odd humour!

Re: Strange problem after switching sound card... 2016/01/02 07:49:47 (permalink)
Well - Here I am again. Sorry about the late reaction, but there where some events (like old years eve combined with family) that kept me busy for a short while...

Anyway - I was able to solve the problem. I think it's good to tell what was causing it, and how I was able to solve it.

The problem basically was caused by the setup I was using with my old audio card (Focusrite Saffire Firewire - white standing model).  This card has several outputs. The first two where routed to my monitors, and got an separate output bus with the ARC2 system inserted as FX. This bus was "branched" as a send from the Master bus. The second output bus had output 5 and 6 and was used as my headphone bus (with TB Isone inserted as FX). The Master bus itself was routed to the (unused) outputs 3 and 4.

The problem started because my new card (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) only had 4 outputs (stereo 1-2 and 3-4), and Sonar got confused by the missing third output pair. This went so far that Sonar kept trying to assign this missing output and got itself in an endless loop.

The solution scook (thanks by the way - as an "old" user that started using sonar from version 6 years back, I should have remembered it) gave did not help very much, because in stead of clicking "OK" the loop kept on going without me having to click anything.

The solution, however, turned out to be very simple. I just disconnected the sound card, started up Windows and Sonar and the project, and all outputs where assigned to the generic windows ASIO drivers. Of course I got a warning that there was no suitable hardware present on the startup of Sonar, but after that I was able to load in the project. I saved the project with the new settings and shutted down Sonar and Windows.

I reconnected the sound card, started up Windows and Sonar and loaded in the project. Now everything went without any problem and I was able to re-assign the correct outputs (in a new configuration of course), and was up and running again with the project.

So - this story has a happy ending. The new year could have not started better (everybody best wishes by the way)... Thanks for helping guy's.
