"Connecting..." means Sonar can not establish bidirectional communication with your device.
Tests you can perform:
1) remove "Mackie Control" from the list of Control Surfaces in Sonar preferences (important step!)
2) add some MIDI track, with Omni input. Arm it and start recording. Press some buttons (and only buttons!) on MCU. Stop recording.
3) if nothing is recorded, MCU can not send anything to Sonar. Check cable connections, Saffire settings, etc.
4) if something is recorded, check what is recorded. Open Event List/PRV. If you see some "Notes", everything is fine. If you see just Control Changes, your MCU can be in HUI mode. Switch to Mackie mode:
http://www.sweetwater.com/insync/switching-mackie-control-between-hui-emulation-mackie-control-mode/ When you get correct messages from MCU, reinsert "Mackie Control". If still you get "Connecting...", response from MCU is not reaching Sonar. Check MIDI activity from MCU side and in Saffire.
