Why do scrolling lists keep repeating themselves?
At first I thought I was going mad but these days I'm seeing it more and more. Often when I'm scrolling down a list of something on a web page the list will start repeating itself in sections, sometimes 3 or 4 times. Happens on my Facebook newsfeed a lot (even on the iPhone app) but also on any site that has a long list of something, e.g. those "top 100" type pages. Is there some common resource that all of these apps or browsers use that has a scrolling bug in it? Perhaps it's WebKit or something. Anyway it's really annoying and if it is a bug, it's been annoying me for years.

Hi, In general ... and I am not the expert on this, here is an example. We have at work the enterprise 7 version of things. No issue there. But the firewall and protection services are heck on the network. The end result is that you open up a msn.com, and it takes forever and some of the stuff does not open correctly. The same for cnn.com, and eventually, espn.com says you have a bad version of the browser. Considering how bad IE loads pages, and adding a tough firewall, means that your page is going to have issues, on the display side of it, and once you hit the arrow key, now you have 2 requests for the same page, or reload, and this tends to be hack on old/bad video cards on cheap machines. Duplication is inevitable, otherwise the video card would not be doing this to your monitor. There maybe other issues here, but the video/display is likely to be the first ... remember that at the very least you know that the video card is getting multiple requests for the page, thus the duplication, so, it's also possible that this could be a result of very bad/poor drivers for the card, or just simply an inefficient card. But, nowadays, web pages are simply over loaded and then some.

I really don't think it's a performance issue. I have a 120mbps connection, use Chrome and everything loads blazing fast. My computer is pretty powerful with a decent graphics card whose drivers are up to date. I've noticed this on different computers and laptops over the years. I would not be surprised if its a Webkit related issue, or the offshoot Blink that Chrome uses.

Possible. I think that some of it is related to the scripts that run over the page ... which interfere with the quality of the page load. For example, I checked on a synthesizer, and now every page I load has a little spot with it and at least 2 or 3 different places where I can purchase that thing. Those are not "permanent" bits and pieces, and they "update', regularly through out the connection, thus it is always competing for connection space. I do think that a lot of this "commercial" side of things on browsers is out of line, and I'll be the last in line when Netscape wakes up and charges me $10 dollars monthly for me to never have to see that added stuff again!

My guess would be that it's probably not a display issue but rather a data-retrieval issue. All of those entries are being sucked out of a database, and there's an art/science to designing databases and writing database queries that minimize duplication. Your average web designer knows little of such things.
