Time for a new car.... thinking about a Volkswagen Golf-R.
It looks like a fun car, 292 hp, and decent gas mileage. I don't think VW can sell diesels again in the USA, yet. I figure maybe I'll get a good deal from them. I'd like a turbo diesel but gas is OK. All wheel drive, premium stereo (of course). DCC auto transmission. It lets you choose between comfort, sport, and racing style chassis control (I like that). Probably going to get everything except the driver assistance package and the bike rack, net, and other stuff like that. It's what I want but man... it will be hard to not just go with a Jetta since it, the Jetta, is around 20k. I'd regret it though. This one is one of the Car and Driver top 10 cars of 2016, so it must be pretty good and fun. I checked out the GTi but I only save about 3k and lose 72hp. HP is FUN! Trading in my 1994 Nissan SE V6 truck. Probably going to sell my business in a couple of months. I've kept it mostly for the benefit of the guy who works for me, he's a good guy but whoever buys will have to keep him on as part of the deal. We plan to take that money and buy rental houses. I hope it is a good plan. These days, who knows. I certainly am not putting money in the DAW DOW, that really was a slip lol. Good choice? J

Yeah, I can see that. They are still the largest auto company in the world. They'll pay big time, but in the mean time I hope they will offer some deals. I'll leave the punishment and fines to those who handle such things. It's not my hill to die on. I just don't care much about what VW did... but like I said, there are those who do and VW will pay and they should and that should be enough. They got caught. They have to pay. I began to buy mostly BP gasoline after the oil spill in the gulf because so many elderly people in the UK were invested for their retirement in BP and being close to the gulf I saw how corrupt it all was. So many people who suffered NO harm were getting huge checks and the government was punishing BP. Yeah, they did the wrong thing (someone did) with the oil rig but too many people suffered for no reason and too many people gouged BP for no reason. I don't know what all went on with VW other than they cheated on emissions along with BMW IIRC. I don't know who knew what but it will be fixed, gooses will be cooked, and they will pay. They will pay dearly, I think that is enough. Just like any criminal, they pay if they are caught and we move on. Now, if they were given a pass, I might feel different. Besides the dealers are Americans who I doubt knew anything. Perhaps it will become a collectors item! J

diesel = fine particulates. France has just banned small diesel engines after thoroughly embracing them years ago. having said that-great car-best of the Golf`s for my money and should be heavily discounted due to the emissions cheating. so-a moral dilemma for a great little car? (disclaimer:my wife drives a BMW120D with a similar motor and loves the grunt of the turbo diesel.) good luck tony

Thanks Ol Pal, I'll take a look. On the VW, no moral dilemma for me. People do things, they get busted, they pay, we shouldn't shun them. They are fixing it and I imagine they will pay more than they ever dreamed of saving. If people can get over the fact that VW was created by the order of Hitler, to make a "people's car" (der volks wagen), then I can get over this emissions thing. I'm neither the government or the police. The big shots will suffer from the fines. I don't care to see the workers or the dealers suffer any more than they have to... so, no moral dilemma here, if fact I feel good about it. I'm glad to know about the diesel engines. I never really liked them anyway. I think they are a financial risk, you get over 50mpg but who knows how much it might cost to fill the tank in a few years. WRX huh... will go look now. Thanks! J

VW group was second behind Toyota in 2014 GM was #7. In 2015 VW was#1. GM was #4 in 2015 http://www.mbaskool.com/fun-corner/top-brand-lists/13630-top-10-automobile-companies-in-the-world-2015.html?start=9 However, that has likely changed for now but I bet they will recover. I have two F-150s for business. One has held up well a 2003 V8, the other a 2004 V6 has had the engine replaced and the transmission rebuilt. When it started to go everything went. I don't think there is anything in the drive train left to replace. I still have an older work truck. The 1994 Nissan SE V6. It has 265,000+ miles on it and it does not smoke but it finally has some sort of engine problem. The shop told me it is either a rocker arm flipped off or a clogged fuel injector but it drops compression on that cylinder so I'm not sure it isn't a valve problem, it is a constant skip but no smoke... not being a mechanic, I don't know. It's been good but I'm going to trade it in. I won't by another Ford. No GM for me either. I'd buy another Ford before I bought a GM. We have had good service from both German and Japanese cars and trucks.

I owned a 2013 GTI gas powered, it was FUN, and actually had good gas mileage for a hi performance car with a turbo while it was in warranty it was fine, when things broke they were expensive. they use a special synthetic oil, which precludes going just anywhere9Not that I would ever recommend the speedy oil/wal marts places) I had an auxiliary water pump(there are 3) go out and when all was done the damage was 900 dollars,, I sold it with only 32K miles before anything else broke road well, was well crafted, had all the features one would want ...

Wow. I'll be sure to check out user reviews and possibly get an extended warranty. I usually buy my own oil and filter then get it done, but under warranty I may have to drive 30 miles to get it done. I don't like that... @ Cint. The Jetta was my original choice. I heard about the Golf from C&D and when looking at the Jetta online. I'll tell you, the Jetta's price may bring me back to it. Both cars have some nice body and engine kits in after market. Hamann and especially Oettinger. They do it all: http://www.oettinger.com/I've even thought about a flat slate colored wrap, but probably not. J

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_exhaust edit:so as not to be hyprocritical we actually traded our 120D yesterday for an Audi Q3 TFSI Quattro-1.4l turbo petrol with virtually identical mileage figures but markedly less emissions. it`s faster but low on torque so will miss the grunt of the 2.0 TDI. (pretty sure it was used in one of the first hybrids to win Le Mans and is still being widely distributed. my 96 diesel hilux will cost me $4k to convert to gas-it`s a farm vehicle worth $10k and is only used for fuel and wood runs so that is also a moral dilemma for me. but where do you start-reducing your carbon footprint is easy but inconvenient. I am typing on a solar powered laptop, grow much of my food,am totally off the electricity grid, gather all water and dispose or recycle all my sewerage and rubbish, but believe me,it`s a lifestyle choice and i honestly envy my peers with their aircon and unlimited power and water........... life is a dilemma

Hi, Jetta 2006 with a 2.5 .... at 67K miles so far. No issues and has been a very good car. Mom had a Jetta Diesel a year or two newer and traded it in, before the fall out for the Diesel stuff ... that thing was a pain when it was cold and the thing about these cars draining the battery when you did not turn off the headlights, and turned the car off, is kinda stupid. She has a 2012 VW something now ... not sure which ... I've been considering upgrading mine a few years, but I like mine and the big sound with the nice set of speakers I put in ... if you find someone driving by blasting Hawkwind, or Can, or Caravan, or something ... you know who that was!

It's kinda fun to watch people's faces ... so I go out of the parking lot playing those two songs loud from Guru Guru's Dance of the Flames ... and the looks are crazy. The opening of "In the hall of the Mountain Grill" is always good. Anything from Groundhogs' Crosscut Saw is excellent ... you know the stuff that you can bomb out really good! One of the kids was playing the the bass thing across the parking lot ... and I had to stop by and ask ... you call that music? They laughed! I was playing "Amore", by Riuychi Sakamoto (Beauty) with the flying guitars! Followed by "Heartbeat' (heartbeat) ... which is even better!
