I just bought a Vox amPlug2
It's the AC30 model  I already have the earlier version of the AC30 which is great, but there is no reverb so with cans on it felt kinda too close and shut in. This is an updated model with supposedly better analog modeling circuitry as well as a number of effects. It has tremolo, chorus, delay and reverb. You can have the tremolo on with the other effects but you have to decide between chorus, delay or reverb because you can only have one at a time. That's a small bummer but you have to remember that this is a very small device with very little room for controls. For each effect you can switch between 3 modes, so the delay has 3 delay times, the chorus has 3 depths and the reverb has 3 decays. I have to say this thing just sounds great, very much like being in a room with a big amp if you close your eyes. The reverb is surprisingly nice and ranges from a short decay to a big long deep decay with loads of depth. Not sure I'll use the delay because I'm not keen on being locked into a tempo, but again the modes range from a short slapback to a sort of 120bpm-ish quarter note time. Another thing they've improved is the connector, which this time is on a pivot so you can swivel it away when you're done. It got in the way on the old model when you wanted to store it. One thing I don't like about it though is that the connector feels looser in the guitar than the old one, so the whole unit swings down when you plug it in. The old one was a tighter fit. Not too much of a biggie though, it just means the controls (gain, tone, volume, FX) are in a different position relative to the player compared to the old one. Anyway very pleased with the improvement over the old model and well worth it at only $40.

Thanks for this review.
I was contemplating buying that, but went with the Amplitube UA instead. Which is handy because it's really flexible, but a pain because you have an interface that needs to be stuck in your pocket (along with your phone) unless you glue on a clip and hook it to the guitar strap.
I might get the Amplug just for simplicity's sake...

Yeah I thought about the AmpliTube iOS thingy and it does look great but in the end decided that since this is primarily for home use then I might as well, y'know, fire up "real" AmpliTube if I want those amps. I got the Vox because I wanted a quick and simple way to play my guitar through cans without having to fire up my DAW. It works great.

It has to be said though, they are quite "light" in construction, but I guess they're just housing a chip which contains the amp simulator.

Yes, they're basically headphone amps that are tweaked to sound like real guitar amps. You could plug that one into a bass and it would work, or you could get the one that emulates the bass version of the Vox AC30

There are four different models you can get - AC30, Classic Rock, Metal and Bass. So yes, these work with bass but you'd have to buy the bass one.

I have the old one, but have not used it for a while. In fact, I kind of forgot that I have it. Thanks for reminding me Shark. I agree with your assessment of the old AC30 amPlug.
I also have the Amplitube iPhone/ iPad sims. Though I like them and they sound good; its just a hassle to hook everything up to get it all working together. I think the Vox is much more user friendly for this lazy musician.
What I have been using the most lately, is my Peavey 20w Head running in 1w mode. I can play it super quite and still have tube tone going. Nothing simpler than plugging in and flipping the toggle to 'on'. It has a head phone out if I need to be completely silent.
