I would say yes it does eat your data (I'm lucky and have unlimited data with T-Mobile).....but, here's some info that might be useful: https://www.puretalkusa.com/blog/video-streaming-data-explained/ Can you just use WiFi when watching Netflix? (so you won't have to use your data allowance)

UD costs me another $40/month over my 1G plan. I'm with AT&T. Mesh Can you just use WiFi when watching Netflix? (so you won't have to use your data allowance)
That assumes wherever I am I can get a WiFi connection.

Possibly take a look at what other carriers provide/rates and maybe switching over might be a good thing?? T-Mobile has been very good for us (long time customers) and I can recommend them (good customer service too). If you're interested, they have some incentives when switching carriers (paying for your old phones etc..): http://www.t-mobile.com/offer/switch-carriers-no-early-termination-fee.html

I've never used Netflix on my phone but I use Spotify, and streaming over the network absolutely eats into your data unless you're on wifi. However, with Spotify there is an option to save songs to your phone to listen to offline, and so this is what I do. I have about 1000 songs saved, all at 320kbps so great quality. If Netflix doesn't have such an option, it should.

If you're downloading data over the network, there's no way it wouldn't affect your data quota (there's another of those double negatives!). Unless of course you're hooked up to wifi?

I just did a quick search and it seems that Netflix does not allow offline watching on tablets or phones. The reason they give is ludicrous - apparently they believe that it adds a layer of complexity that most consumers won't want. OK then... However the good news is that Amazon Prime does allow offline viewing on mobile devices. While this was originally limited to their Fire tablets, you can now watch offline on any Android or iOS device. Personally I got rid of Netflix ages ago once I realized that my Amazon Prime subscription offers video streaming as well. I know there's stuff on Netflix that's not on Amazon Prime, but I haven't been bothered by this yet. It seems that most everything I want to watch is on there.

Late to the party... Yes... it will eat into the data allotment if your plan has a limit. Use Wi-Fi and shut off the mobile data. Watch to your heart's content. I had to inform my daughter about the data limits..... she was watching her "shows" on the mobile data and it was killing my data plan by the 3rd week..... with better than a week to go.... I was out of data. It will also eat into your battery reserve. Run it on the charger and use some nice earbuds and it's not a bad viewing experience in the manner you describe using it. I guess watching Netflix at lunch beats schmoozing with the boss and having to laugh at his crappy jokes and stories huh?
