64bit Plugins are my friends.

Hey Folks.
During the early part of last year I had a mixed bag of success and failure with the new Sonar updates; quite a few niggling problems and the dreaded white screens! Working in the studio this week I realised that despite editing and recording a variety of projects with all kinds of plugins (including melodyne 4) I have not experienced a single crash, whitescreen or restart. Upon reflection it has pretty much been this way for the last 2 months.  It's funny how you notice the problems but tend to take it for granted when they aren't there. Sorry about that bakers!

The thing that made all of the difference was I changed over to a purely 64bit system - windows, Sonar and ALL plugins. It was admittedly hard to let go of a couple of oldies but goldies, but I am so glad that I did. Most of the clinging to old plugins was just habit, and I am certain that I have found better sound now that I have been forced to use newer options.
There are probably people running bridged plugins without issue - I guess it is the luck of the draw, but the results of my undoubtedly skewed study of one are that getting rid of all 32bit plugins, along with bitbridge and jbridge certainly did the trick.
I know this has all been said before - it was a post like this that planted the seed for me to change over. Just thought I would pass it on in case anyone else is late to the party like me.

Happy days:)

Bruce.

This is a great thread. I couldn't be happier this is being pointed out. Great advice from the OP.

I have been fully 64 bit for a long time.

Yes - I was a bit late to the party guys as I was stuck with 2 Yamaha digital desks that had no 64 bit drivers. Great to hear others with the same experience.

And happy birthday Bapu. Heres hoping 64 stops you glitching and crashing too:)

Re: 64bit Plugins are my friends. 2016/02/05 16:06:45 (permalink)
It all sounds pretty tempting, and for the most part I am already running things that way ... but there are still a few things I can't give up unless somebody can point towards some replacement plugins. I'm still badly addicted to the old NI B4 plugin. I don't think Native Instruments themselves are even putting this out anymore. What else can a guy use to get credible B3 organ sounds?

I also was a big fan of Dreamstation believe it or not. That synth was so lightweight and easily programmable that it became a go to for me. I need something like this in 64-bit as well. Tried to make Novation Bass Station work and it crashed my system left and right. They don't appear to be too supportive of 64-bit over there at Novation. Well,  there was a version to be sure, but it messed things up for me.

it appears i've fallen off the tune-wagon yet again ...

Hey Scott. That is exactly where I was too. Unfortunately it is those couple of 32bit plugins that make all of the difference with regard to stability.
Synth sounds are such a subjective choice, but as a replacement for dreamstation, have you tried Sylenth1? You can download a demo here:
https://www.lennardigital.com/downloads/

B4 sounds I tend to change on a regular basis depending on what synths I have open (I have favourites in Kontakt and ST3). My suggestions may not be much help here as I am clearly not as choosy in that regard:) I am sure there are many others who will have great ideas.

Thanks. Good lead on the Sylenth 1.

I forgot to mention how much I love a free plugin called Synth 1 (64-bit). This thing, as far as I can tell, is a recreation of the Nord Lead and has some really great, dimensional sounds. You can hear it on my synth soloing on this track at: 1:08 and again, with a different patch, at: 2:15.

Love this thing. But it was made by a japanese guy and most of the documentation available on how to tweak it is in japanese!

Does anybody know where I can get more sounds for Synth 1?

VB3 by GSi Instruments for sure for Hammond sounds. I'm not sure if the 64 bit version is still officially a beta but it works great in any case. I have no clue why NI decided to scrap B4 and go with the sample based "vintage organs" in Komplete. Really dumb move.

OP-X Pro II by SonicProjects is a great vintage sounding synth that's very affordable and has a 64 bit beta that works flawlessly. Depending if you prefer more modern sounds (Sylenth) or older ones (OPX) those should give you some options.

Old. Love the old stuff. The patches seem more usable to me.

OP-X Looks great! About exactly what I want actually.

You've probably seen this, but for others :  here's the 'manual' in English.

The 64-bit version appears to be beta for the moment (and has been for a while).

Tried it and it works (though Norton wanted to throw it away).  It's got some nice fm sounds, at first glance.

14,000 patches for Synth 1.  Not an endorsement !  I just stumbled upon the page.

Thanks for the tip Scott.

Hope you like it, I certainly prefer it over Dreamstation. It comes with a huge library of vintage patches too. One of the best sounding "vintage" VAs, to me, and cheaper than most.
