Harry in Winter

Hi guys,

This isn't something that I've done before, but I learnt a lot of doing this. I transcribed Patrick Doyle's beautiful piece of music and did my own arrangement of it. No way near as great as the original, but gave me some good understanding of how this piece was put together. All comments welcome :)

Great job on this Gus! I'd like to hear a little more warmth on the mix overall. The strings holding the longer notes can be a little harsh sounding, and they tend to steal the focus from the other instrumentation.

Wow! Nice job . . . What a thing to take on . . . I liked your version. I'd echo Dan's comments about the sustains on the strings occassionally building up to a slight harshness, for me, just on the longer sustains. Maybe a volume envelope judiciously applied??

Makes me want to go back and watch the movies.

    cheers,

Nice one!    I think you did a great job on this.  It's not a simple task to take an orchestrated piece and emulate it from scratch.   I had to look up the original version because I didn't remember it, and I've seen the HP movies more than a few times (my wife is a big fan).   And now that I have... just another +1.

Other than the sustains which can be a bit edgy, the overall mix sounds wide and deep.

Thanks for your ears and words. I did mix it with a cold, which may explain the cold sounding strings. I have gone back to them and worked at taking the harshness away, bringing more warmth as suggested. I have uploaded a newer version which I feel works better. Thanks for the feedback, it really helped.

Dan- Many thanks for pointing that out, very helpful.
Tom - Go back and watch the magic and hear the fantastic music from some of the best film composers.
Steve - I've seen the films plenty of times too. Gone to the studio tour in London, this music is also in the room with the massive model of hogwarts, is an awesome sight

Stumbled upon this just as SKY are showing all the HP films this weekend.  Nice job, thanks for sharing.

That's very nice indeed Gus. Not a big HP fan so I don't know the piece, but it's beautiful. Excellent work putting it together.

Excellent job Gus - it must have been a major undertaking. I'm not familiar with the piece but it certainly is beautiful.

I like this..alot!! I'm not familiar with the original but if I had just one critique it would be add something to reprsent some low end orchestration. Even if it was just some timps. Otherwise, sweet!!
