Best value CPU MOBO combination. [Answered]

I'm finally on the way to finishing my studio and may have the money to do a computer upgrade as well.

You can see my current setup (in signature) which is no slouch but financially the timing is pretty good right now.

geeze, Mike... ur lookin' pretty good to me!  It is soooo frustrating the trend to mobility and lack of any real competition has shifted intel's focus away from serious power user enhancements!  One thing I'd really like is a more hugely powerful primary core, as this is what tends to saturate, along with 5 ,7 or 9 ancellary cores...

Right now I don't think much has happened to make our systems obsolete.  I periodically track this, with CPU porn running in my veins and the ability to squish mine with some of airwave's omnisphere multis or breaktweeking..and SPlat's print to audio now solves much of the overload for me... Plus I just don't see anything worth the money beyond maybe going with VEP Pro and hanging a couple new/old DAWs on the VastMaschine... but this takes brains and time to configure... you probably gots it bedder den me in dat area!

I'll be curious what the pros say to your queri... I'm subscribing to ur thread!

I agree with Dana here.  You've got a powerhouse system already.  Unless you are routinely hitting above, say, 60-70% on your cpu, that's probably not where you should be spending your cash.  I was faced with the same "dilemma" a few months back.  My rig isn't even close to yours in terms of speed, yet it does everything I need -- with room to spare.  So instead, I spent my money on SSDs and a more sophisticated backup system.

So, find another part of your setup where you could better utilize an "upgrade".

I wouldn't go out and buy a $2000 lava lamp, but surely there's a guitar/keyboard/zither out there with your name on it...

(Again, obviously if you are hitting the wall cpu-wise, you should just ignore my rantings and maybe give Jim R. a call for an upgrade consult).

    Ahh - that's better ;-)
I was interested in this - because I'm starting to look at the specs of what's available in the new CPUs and mobos.
From my limited research - I don't think you're going to find anything that's much better than what you've already got. Plus you always take the chance of introducing new "incompatibilites" or "issues" when you change motherboards ;-)

You'll see in my signature, I'm running a i7 3770K @ 4GHz with Z77 chipset, and I'm thinking I might wait another year or two before worrying about upgrading. I thought the only upgrade path that's worthwhile for me - is to move to 6 (hyperthreaded) cores - but you've already got that too ;-)

Re: Best value CPU MOBO combination 2016/02/15 05:30:16 (permalink)
My setup is in its 5th year which is starting to seem old even though performance wise I haven't ever run into a wall despite slamming it with plugins and big projects.

My reasoning is that I have the money at the moment and IF there's a good value combo around I may well get it.

I only need CPU, MOBO and RAM probably. Drives, case graphics, power supply will all stay as it is. Though I could just build a whole new machine and have a studio backup.

In any case at this stage I'm only thinking about it and to be honest because this computer has been solid as a rock I haven't really kept up with all the latest in CPU s MOBOs chipsets etc. if someone had a suggestion for a best value combo around that would give me somewhere to start looking.

I asked a question and am still waiting for an answer. I like to stay one small step behind the expensive rigs and look for performance with value for money. There's a sweet spot where value and performance cross over and that's what I want to know.

    Hi Mike,

I think I'm coming to the conclusion that it's not really worth upgrading right now - but see what others say...

    Mike,
Your set up looks pretty muscular already.
The only thing you don't mention is your HDDs.  Are they SSD? Raptor?
If not, you might want to spend some of the extra cash and upgrade them in that direction.
You would see an immediate jump in speed and stability.
Also, Dave (Bitflipper) has posted a "beginners" video on CPU usage vs Real Time Performance that was REALLY good in explaining the difference (and some reasons why).  Definitely worth a view http://forum.cakewalk.com/Another-good-video-for-beginners-m3370512.aspx

I'm in the market for an i7 6700 based system with a motherboard that supports 64 GB. Most standard systems from Dell and HP only seems to support 32 GB, which is a bit of a bummer. I gave up building my own years ago, but it might be necessary.

I"ll scan this Forum, but if there are any recommendation meeting my base requirements, I'd appreciate a note.

I think several of us have answered your thread, Mike... intel hasn't done diddly in recent years, focusing on mobile... SSD's are a huge improvement.  Call some of the DAW makers on the board here if you want to eeeek out a tad more performance but I've been in the same boat for awhile, spend time periodically tracking developments and my little ole' 6 core 4930 is still up there, as is yours... Personally I think it's crazy to dump money into replacing a high end cpu with a tad better when you don't have SSD's (or so it seems from ur sig)...

Memory is top on my list right now... wanna bump to 64; I routinely run out. Then learn/get VE Pro5 to eeek out a lot more (Great thread by DRanck) and maybe the next gen next year will be worthy of it's cost... might be two years.   I planned on upgrading before now but, to be frank... I think it's stupid unless you got money to burn and already have ssd's...

    Oh, yea, Bit's thread

    Man I must be daft.

There isn't actually a question anywhere in my first post but if any question is implied surely it's stated in the thread title not in the bit of background info I gave.

Anyway my comment wasn't directed at you as you said you were "looking over my shoulder". That really implies that you also were interested in finding out what was the best value CPU MOBO combination. You certainly weren't interested in what I should do.

Anyway it's a moot point. I have an answer as I've indicated in an updated thread title.

Thanks Bobf. You've contributed nothing to this thread and now come in name calling. Sure I'm cranky, but name calling; really.

So there have been no CPU and MOBO updates in the 5 years since I built the system in my specs. Wow!

So you would advise someone looking to put together a computer today, to buy my MOBO and CPU combo.

My crankiness comes from the fact that I've told, I don't need to update, while some said you're pretty well off already and some said there's nothing out there better than what you have, but NOONE has told me what there is so I can decide whether the small increase in performance is worth it.

As I said I haven't kept up with what's happening in the PC game in the last 5 years but there must be a MOBO with new chipsets and extra features that I don't have and may want and there has to be at least one CPU that's faster, more economical or something than my 5 year old processor.

I'd left the thread finished it thanks for revving it with an insult.

Do you feel better for it?

Here's the thing - have a look at the top cpus on tomshardware.co.uk
    http://www.tomshardware.c...ck,review-32901-5.html

There is nothing that's got any better specs - unless maybe your clock speed is a little slower (I'm on my phone and can't see your specs)
New chipsets won't give you anything more than marginal improvements as will moving to DDR4.

You have to do a little looking up too ;-)

You might notice I put answered in the title.

I always end up doing my own looking up. I don't ask many questions here and often I even research material so I can give an answer.

I just had this idea that out of the many people on this forum someone might just say " oh this CPU and this MOBO is about the best value at the moment"

It never happened so I got the answer for myself. Hence the title addition of Answered.

Mike... would you mind sharing your answer?  I for one would be interested...along with John.  I tagged this thread as I'm always open to improvements I might not know about.

If it helps someone, the best CPU/mobo bang for the buck for my last build was an i7-5820K on an ASUS X99-A mobo. Least amount of "extras" for a dedicated DAW. SSDs made a big difference as well. No issues with the build, no problems over the last few months, Sonar running very well indeed.

This combination  depending on mobo generation seems to be holding up well in a many setups.

Yep, and they landed on the moon with way less computer power than  the average smart phone has.

We probably can't buy that computer Bat, unless we want it used. You know planned obsolescence :) and we would need tons of guitars and outboard gear :) and be able to play like you.

but also making the point that it's not about your rig,
    it's about your craft.
so folks that cannot afford a 'rig', can still do what they need to do.
    that's all.
