How does your Home Studio look like / Ergonomical questions

I always have a hard time with my hobby. I am saying hobby specifically, I'm no pro or even good at playing ... I just love sounds and synths. But the computer desk is not made to host my 88 key masterkeyboard well .. it gets cramped. You have to reach far for mouse and computer keyboard, till you get hand pains and others. So I'm trying to come up with some cool DIY ideas or trying to find vailable solutions etc ... things where you can move your masterkbd under the table by means of a drawer, which you can adjust in height once out .... a similar thing for mouse and kbd to pull out across the master on its right side ... low enough to allow for some sensible ergonomy etc.

It seems like this topic comes up every so often in the Cakewalk Forums. Interesting topic though. Member's studios appear to range from very nice modest bedroom setups to professional grade arrangements. Try using the Search feature and you should get hits. Here is one recent thread. It might not answer your specific issues on keyboard arrangement, but might offer some ideas for thought:

I made a stand for my 49 key keyboard that let's my PC keyboard just barely slide under.  I'm in a corner desk.

I have a rack of wide shelves on the wall where my desk is - the lowest shelf is about 6 inches above the desk and I put my monitors and screens on this. It's perfect because the screens and speakers are exactly at eye level, and I have space on the desk directly under the shelf to keep my 88 key A800-PRO. Whenever I need to use the keyboard I just slide it towards me (clearing any junk out of the way first, naturally).  It looks neat and tidy and since my screens and monitors are on the shelf I have a lot of room on the desk for musical stuff. Of course you have to make sure the shelf is strong enough - my shelves are attached to 3 vertical tracks which have been fitted to the wall with those ultra-strong wall fasteners. You could sit on 'em.

Hm about what I expected ... as it's not much different for me. The problem with a simple table is: it's fine for the PC ... all on the right height, but the Masterkeyboard (MKbd) would be way to high up to play sensibly (and will cause hand problems ... which I have due to years of PC work). If I lower the MKbd to palyable heights, it's lower than any PC table and then you have all your PC kit on the side or awkwardly far off behind the MKbd.

I need to think of a solution that provides both ... I'm thinking of using some monitor arm, presenting the monitor above the Mkbd ... and some sort of mouse/keyboard rest, provided by some stand behind the MKbd or so....

@sharke
Don't you smack your knees into the MKbd under the table? My Arturia Keylab 88 isn't outrageously fat or so ... but it's high enough to get in the way of thighs/knees I think. otherwise, this would be one of the best solutions. Rich guys can go this way:

So the goal is a simple variant of that ( no need for 19" rack space etc up there for me ).

Got this corner desk with slide-out PC keyboard tray on Amazon, very pleased with it. My ancient Roland D-20 sits perfectly on the long side in front of the screen and Tannoys, which are raised up on a pair of hi-fi speakers. I find the position quite comfortable for playing the keys.

I love it already just because it's a D20. Gives me Nostalgia, as my first "real" synth was a D10 :)

I like those setups, but I have to consider that I also use the very smae computer for long, crazy gaming sessions, so I need a double ergonomy, that fits both uses. I *could* use my laptop for music ... but it always feels crazy to go onto a small, slower machine and leave the big hexacore unused for some task... sigh.

Your priorities are wrong.  Use the laptop for games.  Problem solved!

If you tell me how I can cram my three GPUs into the laptop, then maybe ... if I also manage to watercool it, so it is just as silent as the desktop :P (Too many hobbies .. Games, Rendering and Sounds :P).

Re: How does your Home Studio look like / Ergonomical questions 2016/02/08 15:01:29 (permalink)
Mine looks like an inefficient garbage heap at the moment. Looks pretty cool when it's clean though.

No pics.

I essentially have two folding tables. One I bought and another I built from an old door and some folding table legs I bought fromt he hardware store. One has my DAW, flatscreen, monitors (sitting on stacks of old books), QWERTY keyboard and trackball. The interface sits on top of the DAW case. To the right of that is my mixer and controllers (which all get covered up with towels until I'm ready to use them) and has enough room for my laptop for research and intertube breaks. To the left are my amps and guits. I've got hooks and floating shelf on the walls to hang cables and store crud on and I have a wacky wire run scheme using nails and velcro straps at the top of the walls to keep active audio cables and other long runs away from the equipment (to minimize mess and hum). Behind me I've got a cabinet for mics and other crud and I use all the room under the tables for storage.

It would be MUCH cleaner/organized/pretty if I didn't also use it as my "office" as well. I've got paperwork scattered everywhere. lol

But I do like the "Mission Control" feel to it all. Surrounded by the tables and gear I just roll in and get to it. If I had some dough I'd definitely refine it better and wish I were in a slightly larger room (and more soundproof... ugh). All in all though I think I set it up about as good as I could with what I've got within the space I have.

In addition to voice-over work, I did two completely different types:  Rock and trance.  I lost most of my finished work (and all my trance) when I put them on a new type of media for safekeeping (a Panasonic CD/PD - supposed to be secure for 40 years) prior to reformatting and reinstalling.  Ever heard of a PD?  Exactly...  Years of work gone.

Since that happened I mostly played for fun and/or with friends.  I've got some songs that were collaborations with a guy in the UK and a singer in Belgium (we called ourselves Mushroom Farm after the first song we did).  The format was this:  The guy in the UK picked the name of the song then I had to write lyrics to go with it (NOT easy with the choices he came up with - lol!).  One of us created the initial format and/or a riff (he did all the lead work).  It went from there until we were ready to get Bouke (our singer) involved or other help.  I really had to work on Bouke's English since the only style he knew was Country with all the usual twang and warblings.

Here's Mushroom Farm: http://www.nwdreamer.com/download/mushroomFarm-ReMastered.mp3

And, the wonderfully immature, Spanking the Monkey: mushroom-farm-spankingthemonkey-REMASTERED.mp3

Finally, here's a work in progress, where I'm playing all the instruments.  Apologies in advance for the drums, I had only been playing them for two weeks and it shows!  http://www.nwdreamer.com/download/Berry-Jam.mp3

Don't think I explained it well enough. Will post a photo when I get home. Basically I have a wall of shelves behind my desk. The lowest shelf is about 6 inches ABOVE the desk. I have my screens and monitors on it. This leaves my desk free, and the MIDI keyboard sits at the back of the desk, under the shelf, when it's not being used. So basically it's directly underneath my monitors. I just slide it towards me when I need it.

I have a 49 key controller on a keyboard trey, which I tuck under the desk when not in use. I do have a big 88 key, with tons of knobs and sliders, but it ended up in the storage closet. I prefer the convenience of the 49.

I tend to keep things very tidy - I don't work well in clutter.

In fact, I keep on removing gear and storing it away, as you can see in this pic taken last week or so...

The desk is a simple office desk found on Amazon. Work great for my purpose.

Here's my dreary little home office/music production corner. As you can see I have some strong track shelving and I have the screens and monitors on the bottom shelf so that my MIDI keyboard can be stashed underneath. The shelves were from Home Depot, I used those ultra-strong wall fasteners (and lots of them) so weight isn't a problem. The desk is just perfect, I got it from Ikea.

Of course a shelf next to a wall ain't the ideal place for monitors but hey, this is an untreated room anyway and I clear most of the room crap up with ARC2 which does a fantastic job under the circumstances.

I take it that you've finally removed that sticker from your Tele's pickguard, then... (I seem to recall you mentioning something about that. Or maybe I'm confused...)
