Mixing down audio

One thing that should be optimized is when mixing down the whole project. This takes a lot more time than I feel is necessary and it's not taxing my CPU (i7 3770K) more than 34%. Why is it not higher? Is this due to my harddrive not being fast enough?
I've tried moving the project from my normal harddrive to my OS SSD, but it didn't really have an impact on the performance of the mixdown. I had a look at the Windows 10 task manager, and not much was going on on the harddrive activity. Maybe this is something that can be improved in future versions?
