OK I give up... CTRL+CLICK solo

Can someone succinctly explain how CTRL+CLICKing Solo buttons works? I'm talking about a project with MIDI tracks and audio. I lost all playback (despite bouncing meters in the ProChannel) with nothing muted and somehow got everything back, after some frustration, by CTRL+CLICKing.... something...

I would really like to know what I did to avoid pulling my hair out again over it.

I'm not sure about Ctrl+clicking, but I have found I sometimes need to cycle the solo button on/off to get the solo on an Aux track completely canceled after using the global unsolo button. The Aux track's solo isn't lit, but it's still active, causing everything to be silent.
