Vocal mic question-EDITED

EDIT: After further study-the knob on the Steller CM-5 psu was moved-guess I did by accident, It faces away from me when recording-anyway I always had it at the default-12 noon-which supposedly is the default pattern?. Now it does sound fuller, more defined, but not a whole lot really, but maybe enough to keep. I love when I have conversations with myself like this-just kidding---as I babble on.
So, I bought a Stellar CM-5 about 18 months ago-after reading all the hype etc on the gear page. As I posted a few days ago, I also have the original SP C1-audio797 logo, first batch in the late 90's-yup, pretty old but by no means over used-under used actually and well taken care of. Anyway to my ears-after 2 days of listening -everything same\same-with fx and without fx...both thru Warm Audio WA1`2-they sound exactly the same to my ears? Is this possible? Maybe the CM-5 isn't as good as I thought or the audio797 C1 is better than I thought.  BTW, I know they both are low end vocal mics but I am in a home studio and only need it for vocals-mine.
So.............? I have my reasons for asking.
Thanks folks
Frank

You'll be amazed. I'm not the only one recommending the CAD E100s on the forum. It's stellar.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Appreciate the link, but kind of was not my question. Thanks

The real difference in equipment isn't in doing every day recording chores - almost everything these days work pretty good.  The real difference is in using the good stuff at the edge of capture - driving a preamp so it puts a little hair on the right sound or backing the mic farther away from the source (using a high-gain preamp) to capture more of the room and to get a sound with a little more space in your song's soundscape naturally.

And it usually takes a while for your ear to get used to the difference in sound quality - it is really quite minor, but important as you develop your craft.  Here at home I used a Joly-mod Oktava for years and it gave me a great sound.  Midrange so it usually punched through but not w/ too much in the highs - kinda opposite of the Chinese capsule sound many complain.  Then I got a cheap Trion and hated it.  It was more .. distinct than the Oktava, but you had to get right up on the mic to get any semblance of balance in the sound - more than a few inches away seemed to lose all bass response.  Then a studio owner who does a lot of buying/trading let me in on a good deal he got on a Microtech Geffel 930 FET.  It gave the high end w/o losing the bass and was even more discrete in the sound.  A lot more modern sounding.  I'm sure any engineer and most musicians could here the difference, esp. if pointed out.  Untrained ears would probably need a lot more guidance to pick out that nuance, much less any idea of how to use that nuance.

So, the short of it, give the mic time.  I haven't used any of the Steller stuff but it seems to be a response to the Chinese raspy capsules and if you've read Joly's stuff he has a good explanation of how many of the early East capsules got to be harsh.   If you hated it I'd say return it.  But you don't - you are just wondering how much better it might be, esp. for the money.  It won't be a world of difference, but once you reach a certain level of competency, you start looking for those little things that give you an edge.  Most likely, you'll learn to use the Steller to your advantage, even if it is a small one.  I know, I've bought a bunch that were good deals (the CAD Trion 8000 was $200 that week) and many I don't use much.  But some, like the Geffel, end up being better than good.

Good luck Frank and I hope you enjoy the mic.

AT...Well that was more than I could ever expected-Just great explanation for me.
I really appreciate you taking all that time to explain so well. I will continue using the Stellar, just as you pointed out and I touched on in my edit of my op...I do hear a difference-something (for the better) but hard for me to grasp exactly what it is-right now anyway.
Truly appreciated
Frank
