directionless electronic murk tune

my most recent effort

'fallen Snow' at the soundclick site in my signature

already I've gotten the not up to standards of previous work on this one

and i know it's murky in places, but I don't mind some murk, just too much

so what's left to say?

A litle too murky for me. I think you have some interesting material in there, carve out some of the murk to let it out.

i really liked this one reminded me a lot of the boards of canada actually.

although I agree that its pretty murky. with a lot of anti phase issues that would probably help clean it up if you addressed them.

I remember you where using atmosphere from time to time, and i know from personal experience that although the individual patchs can sound awsome on there own they can take alittle work to get them to sit well in a composition

if you're interested you could try following some of shperis's links on the site (see link below).

i realised that you managed to get a very hot recording though the rms was
-8.8 db although the wave appeared not to be squared off . how did you manage to get it so hot?

per track compression? I,d be interested to see how you did it.

but over all, i once again very much enjoyed your work

EDIT: In fact I,d quite like to have a go a mixing it if you're interested. of course I can't offer much in the way of experience or talent but it could be an interesting experiment, and you'd be free to throw it in the bin afterwards (and retain all rights of course).

anyway let us know what you think and maybe we can arrange something.

heres a link to the last thing i did, plus all the links to spheris's advice are futher down the post if you want them.

i meant to listen to your work tonight
but got into redoing this tune

    it's no longer directionless murk
it's considerably cleaner and quieter character
and has a bit more structure

still may have phasing issue -- i have to catch up on these threads

i did sort of like that grunge, but things just took a turn
but i thought in a way i was forcing something that wasn't quite there

i master in P5 using Voxengo Polysquasher and Elephant
i check it in Inspector to get hot, but still have as much dynamic range as I can

works very well (sparkly and transparent) for me with my heavy emphasis on pads
(i don't have atmosphere -- i rely on rhino and absynth a lot -- and this piece relies a lot on angelina)

i will catch up your work this week

    appreciate your comments

can you mix effectively on a downloaded mp3?
have a go if you wish
but it's not the same piece

the bigger challenge would be the murk causd mostly by more feedback machine on that rhino texture preset

    i'll catch up tomorrow

    hi jan

is the new version up yet? I,d be interested to hear it.

regarding me trying to do a mix, i really would approach it from a purely experimental view point I think you already have a really good idea of what you want from your arrangements, but it could be an intersting experience for me to work on some one elses composition, and perhaps for you to hear another take on your work.

you would be more than welcome to do the same with a track of mine if you felt like it.

i thinking you could send me the tracks as dry mp3s but we can discuss this via e-mail if you want to go ahead with the project.

look forward to hearing from you

    kieran

    the new version is up

so one track was discarded and a bass part added.

i'll look to convert tracks to mp3s with all fx removed
here are 6 synth tracks and 3 drum tracks

might be surprised how little is actually going on w/o fx

i'd like to do an alternate track with more feedback machine applied to the rhino texture to see what can be done with that

the 'problem' i've been working at in the last few effort has been trying to get a diffused but defined background pad. if it gets diffused too much I lose the chordal movement. i've heard it done in a few pieces i just can't get there.

hi jan had a listen to your latest version

liked the bass line you did but noticed you dropped the accordion sound which i acutally quite liked myself. kind of gave some puntuation to the high mid end

overall sound quality was about the same a bit muddy down low, but i think i prefered the original ending better myself though.

IMO whilst those chord changes can work well with more conventional music styles, they don,t always do so well for me in electronica, i almost find them too musical, if you get what i mean, and can distact from the hypnotic feel the genre often has.

that said I,ve never sold 1000's of records either so what do i know

still I like your stuff and look forward to our experiment.

    (i sent you mail today)

    all the best

    kieran

i have noticed the dilemma of balancing the chord changes and conventional songwriting skills that I'm interested in and the electronic world of textures and atmosphere that I'm also interested in.

my tune reindeer sky was identified here as pretyy much a pop ballad done with electronic instruments and I think that's about right.

i think my previous tune 'Requiem rodentia' went too far into song structure and detracted from the 'atmosphere'

it's a balance that sometimes works better than others
usually i try to have three sets of changes

the original version had 2 sets of changes and just repeated the beginning as the end

the accordian part is still there, but it's been f'ed by a wide chorus and a volume envelope, so the attack and release aren't very distinct.

    for those with electronica interest

    we of the P5 ilk
generally post our electronica on that forum, rather than here
i venture to teh songs forum to get to a wider set of production and other responses

but i include here a few links to other electronica from other active P5 forum members
