I registered for the webcast on the 25th. Hyperbolic marketing, as always with those guys. Remember the V1v3 launch last spring? I made it half-way through the webcast, nodded off, logged off...and bought a SPlat subscription with the S1 upgrade money I set aside. I picked up the S1v3 upgrade on sale, so let's see if v3.2 merits ANY of the hype.

Studio One 3.2 Will Raise the Bar Again
Join Us for the Launch on 2/25/2016

Something big has been brewing with the Studio One development team...something revolutionary...we don't use that term lightly around here, but trust us, it fits.

We'll be unveiling the new Studio One version 3.2 in a special webcast at 10 AM CDT on February 25th (rebroadcast 2PM CDT). We'll have guest producers, a live demonstration, product giveaways, and much more.

Don't miss out, Preregister for the Studio One 3.2 Webcast.

This could be a real game changer, if I'm interpreting it correctly.

My two loves, Sonar and Reaper took a heavy hit when Studio One 3 introduced modular routing of effects and synths. Even Reaper took a back seat.

The new "note fx" would nail the coffin of about anything else running for first place. Don't know if others are reading the same thing into it.

Idea is that you can take a track and insert different effects or chains into user defined sections, like a flange on the first measure, a distortion unit on the second etc. Really really hope this is what's coming.

How is this different from the clip FX bin in SONAR?

Ander,

Only here to learn, and if Sonar clip FX bin can pull this off, I've really missed the boat and not given Sonar credit for the function. Can someone verify that Sonar is capable of this... Never thought is was possible in Sonar or anywhere else.

Scenario would be on a single guitar track. Somewhere up the time line you wanted to change the effects chain to accommodate a lead. Then maybe tone it down to a different chain for a few measures, then change the fx chain to something else. Ability to take a continuous timeline on a single track and change the vst or vsti allocations in sections. Hope that this was there all the time and only my ignorance got in the way of recognizing it was possible all along..

I'm not sure if it is equivalent to what Studio One is getting but you can do this with clip FX.  Just split the track into clips for the sections you want to toggle the effects for and then right-click a clip to add an effect to it.  A little FX label will show on the clip and you can click this to get the FX bin once an effect is on the clip.  I haven't used this extensively so I can't say how well it works with things like delay trails but I've used it for things like adding a phaser to a guitar track for just a verse and it worked well.  I don't think you can do the same thing with VSTi instances though.

Re: Studio One 3.2 on the Horizon 2016/02/14 00:35:18 (permalink)
Yes, the Clip FX function in Sonar can do this, but I find it easier to handle this kind of thing by duplicating the track, editing as needed, and use whatever inserts you want for each section.  For example, if you want to use different fx on the chorus vs. the verse, edit the first track to contain just the verses and the duplicate to contain the choruses.  Then you can tell at a glance what section has what fx.

If that's the "game changing" new feature in Studio One, it's a bit underwhelming.  Must be something else.

Cheers,
Eddie

Studio One has had clip FX for years.

There seems to be a lot of speculation as to what the new features might be. VCA faders being one possible option but really one has to just wait and see. Could be anything.

Midi wise apart from no Sysex handling of midi data, midi editing is quite deep and extensive now so not sure if they are going to go down the midi path but you never know either.

Wow, never had the slightest idea that this function existed in either Reaper or Sonar. In Reaper, know you can do some intense automations, but not that you can splice different vst's into different parts of a track. Had relied on having every fx you need loaded on a track and automating an fx to bypass when not needed, then adjusting everything else. Either that or cloning the track. A lot of extra work either way.

Thanks for this info. Got a lot of learning and experimenting ahead.

John

At the risk of being too lazy to read the manual, anyone know of any good online tutorials for the Sonar fx clips?

(edit)  Found good documentation for Sonar. Thanks for the tips

Know this is a Sonar, not a Reaper forum, but have beaten up the Reaper manual, gone thru every command and sub command in the program. 10 years with Reaper.

Seriously doubt that Reaper can do selective fx in selected areas of a track, as seems to be the case with Sonar. If so, someone with higher knowledge clue me in. Makes the chasm even deeper, strengths versus weaknesses between the two programs, unless miracles occur with the next Studio One release and everything you want to do can be done in one program..

The function of fx regions in Sonar is on the cutting edge otherwise.

Me too... S1v3 is sitting on my hard drive gathering dust... the last show was very interesting and got me to grab it but couldn't get into it... mostly because their template system sucks and which is a huge time waster for me...once I probed the differences, I stopped exploring, even with the gracious help of Jeff... Will be curious to see if they've finally tackled that major deficiency.  IMO, sonar does this wickedly awesome... and it is hugely powerful...

Hi John,

Reaper has an Item Editor (similar to Samplitude's Object Editor).
This is an editor for each individual audio "clip" (item in Reaper speak).
Back when Reaper was new (under heavy development), many users (including myself) requested this feature.
You can assign effects/processing per clip (item) using the Item Editor (F2 to open).
You can also swap channels, flip phase, etc... all completely non-destructive.

Best Regards,

Jim Roseberry

OK... I've been watching... sounds like they just copied their own version of the pro channel "huge... no one has this"  Boy, what garbage... They sound a lot like Apple, who copies what android does and tells their audience: "you've NEVER seen anything like THIS before!"  And every clone goes, "wow, sick, just the best... blaw blaw blaw"  oooooh... different instances of console emulator on different busses.... wow! F'n unbelieveable.... not new at all

No mention of track templates in the summary intro... Unless their saving this for a big later reveal, S1v3.2 will still be staying on the shelf... now I can just hope I win the new monitors....

Not hatin' here... marketing is always 50 percent baloney but am disappointed in the templates... although then I might have to really learn two daws... maybe this is a blessing in disguise!

  • damn though... do love console folders.... BAKERS!!!!!!!!
  • emphasis seems to be on putting pro tools to bed.  I must say, if cakewalk had their marketing they'd get more users...
  • Melodyne.... drag and drop adjusted from extracted tempo map right into daw... this IS the way it SHOULD work... BAKERS!!!!
Mostly just made a big deal about Console emulation...acting like it's new when sonar had been doing this and more for years! Oh Apple...how like then u are
  • ok... going to work... just a bunch of blather now...

It looks like they mainly pulled in a bunch of features from competing DAWs rather than introducing anything really groundbreaking.  Not necessarily a bad thing.  I would be a very happy camper if SONAR got the arranger features, the scratchpad, and the ability to easily create parallel FX chains that Studio One just got.
