Deleting successive UAD plug-in instances causes a SONAR crash (CTD) - NOT FIXED!

Deleting multiple UAD plug-in instances causes SONAR Platinum (Machester) to crash to desktop (CTD).  It is quite reproducible with most any UAD plug-in and in earlier SPlat versions. I have been using UAD plug-ins with SONAR for over a decade (every version since 2003) and I don't recall this ever happening before. The repro is quite easy:

1) Open a new multi-track project and insert a UAD plug-in in the Console FX bin.
2) Click "Ctrl + left mouse click & drag" to copy the plug-in across six or more tracks.
3) Now use the "Delete" key as you mouse click over each plug-in to delete one by one.
4) Result is a SONAR CTD.

I am currently using UAD v8.5, but I noticed this in v8.4 as well. I do not have this issue in REAPER, which leads me to believe this is SONAR related.

I have posted a problem report: (CWBRN-46065)

    That's beginning to ressemble a stock answer (and simplistic).

    I just quote below tech support answer:

    Thank you for contacting Cakewalk. We greatly apologize for the delayed response. Our support has been very busy trying to answer all possible customer questions and inquiries. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

    First, let's make sure your version of SONAR is completely up to date. You can do this by opening Cakewalk Command Center, selecting your version of SONAR on the left-hand side, and then clicking the 'Update' button in the center of the window. If the Update button is not available, this means your copy of SONAR is up-to-date.

    If the crashes still occur after the latest update, I recommend that you re-install your Microsoft C++ Redistributable Libraries. Many third-party applications will install these so sometimes the libraries can get skewed as multiple versions exist on the same computer. It might not be SONAR at all, but more so the C++ libraries. Please do this:

    Go to Start > All Programs > Programs and Features and to uninstall any Microsoft C++ Redistributable Packages listed. Afterwards, download these packages directly from Microsoft and re-install them. I have listed the most common Redistributable packages below. If you’re on a 32-bit operating system, I'd get the first three. If you’re on a 64-bit operating system, the second three. If you run both 32-bit and 64-bit SONAR on a 64-bit operating system, install them all.

    For 32-bit operating systems or 32-bit programs on 64-bit operating systems:

        Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package x86: http://www.microsoft.com/...d/details.aspx?id=5638
        Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package x86: http://www.microsoft.com/...d/details.aspx?id=5582
        Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package x86: http://www.microsoft.com/...d/details.aspx?id=5555

    For 64-bit operating systems:

        Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package x64: http://www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx?id=18471
        Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package x64: http://www.microsoft.com/...d/details.aspx?id=2092
        Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package x64: http://www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx?id=14632

    The Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable Package is available at http://www.microsoft.com/...details.aspx?id=30679.

    The Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package is available at http://www.microsoft.com/...details.aspx?id=40784. The 2012 and 2013 Packages contain installers for both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. Note that the 2012 and 2013 Packages each have three available files: vcredist_x86.exe, vcredist_arm.exe and vcredist_x64.exe. You'll only need to install the vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe.

    Best regards,

    Hey thanks for posting the Cakewalk response, but I have a hard time believing that is the solution. I have the very latest up to date Win 10 x64 (all of the latest patches) and by the looks of it just about every C++ Redistributable package there is. These are the ones that came installed in Win 10 and SONAR is supposedly is Win 10 qualified. Honestly, I am with you I don't have time to go through all of that rigmarole for a "maybe" fix. Uninstall all of those C++ Redistributable packages and probably do more harm than good.  I'll just live with the bug in SONAR for now.

    Thanks,

    Thanks for taking the time to do what Cake support suggested. But, as I suspected it has more to do in how the SONAR Platinum code reacts to deleting DSP plugins (like UAD) from multiple FX bins one after another. I think it is something Cake needs to fix. I have not had this problem deleting UAD plug-ins in REAPER and I have not come across any related reports using other DAW apps on the UAD forums. It is quite easy to replicate in SONAR, so it should be an easy fix, if Cake makes it a priority.

    I did not read anything related to this issue in the Newburyport update bug fix list, but after I updated I tried replicating it and I could not do it anymore. So whether by design or happenstance, I guess you could say this bug is now officially squashed.

    Good job Cake!

    It could be something else is going on in your case. In my first post, I posted the video showing how SONAR Plat x64 would consistently crash (100% repro) after deleting a number of UAD plug-ins one after the other. Now, after installing the Newburyport update, no matter how many times I try, I can't get SONAR to crash using the exact same repro. The only system change I made from the time I made that repro video was installing Newburyport. At least in my case, it is fixed.

    Cheers,

    Well it appears I spoke to soon as this SONAR crash to deskstop when deleting successive UAD plug-ins has returned and is quite reproducible even with the latest SPlat 2016.03 build 71. Now I also see the "Now Time" changes to "Reset Button" when the crash happens.

    Simple Steps to repro:

    SONAR Platinum x64:

    1) Open a new SONAR project and add about 6 audio tracks.

    2) Insert a PPI into first track FX insert and then copy to all of the other tracks. Hold "Ctrl" key and left mouse click and drag to each adjoining FX bin to copy quickly, drag and drop from the Media browser or right mouse click in the FX bin and select from the dropdown plugin menu (any UAD FX will do)

    3) After you have inserted a PPI across all tracks FX inserts, start deleting one by one. Right mouse click and select "Delete" from drop down menu, hold the "Delete" key and left mouse click on each PPI to delete or simple do a "Ctrl + Z" for Undo each time.

    4) After a few successful deletions, SONAR will stop running and CTD. The SONAR "Now Time" indicator changes to "Reset Button".

    *Should be able to delete successive UAD plug-ins without issue.

    Billy, I am having the exact same issue!   I thought it was just me until I found this post.  I am keeping an eye on this in hopes Sonar finds a fix for this.  I never had this issue in 8.5 or in X3.  Sadly for me I upgraded to Platinum around the same time I upgraded to W10 so it is hard to say which is the issue.

    This is just fantastic.  I upgraded to the latest version and now I can’t open one freaking project.  I am so sick of losing time and money because I can't count on my software to do it's stinking job.  I feel like the world's biggest idiot for stubbornly standing behind a product that has been slowly but surely turning into the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen.  I have been a loyal user since Cakewalk was a DOS version and I have just had enough.  Every year their "improvements" has made things less stable for me and I no longer trust Sonar.

    I understand your feelings, sometimes I feel that something like this. But sometimes I hear from users of other DAW :) Sonar is not perfect, like everything else in this world. But thanks to this forum we try to bring it to perfection.

    Something of this can help solve your problem. Once it has helped me:
    1. If the project does not start with the UAD, you need to reinstall the UAD driver or just do a restore.
    2. If the problem is the latest version of Sonar, you can just go back to the previous one.

    I tried your suggestion and that worked, so thank you!  Sadly it only worked until I shut down the PC.  When I restarted the PC I had the same issue and seem to have to repeat this process each time.  Do we think this is a UAD issue or a Sonar issue?

    In the case of reinstalling UAD drivers, it is a UAD problem. Or even an operating system (windows).
    Because under normal conditions of any device driver must work firmly.
