Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30.
Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000.
Now add 10. What is the total?

Actually, you CAN overtake the last person, if you lap them. Happens all the time. There's no way of knowing what your position would be after that, without knowing how many people are racing.

Wrong. The question is ambiguous; it does not state that the person you overtook was in second place, just that they were the 'second person'. Without proper qualification, this is a meaningless statement and hence the question is invalid.
"If you overtake the last person, then you are...?"
See above; an ambiguous (open to interpretation), hence invalid question.
Also, you CAN overtake the person in last place if you lap them, i.e. somebody in any position is capable of overtaking the person in last place as long as the race is lap-based and consists of at least two laps.

Hi, This is as bad as asking how many pairs of animals Moses took into the ark! Almost always gets the wrong answer! Btw, years ago, when I took the tax classes for Federal and Oregon, our teacher had some side questions, and these were a part of the test. Why? Because the majority of the tax code is about ... asking the right question, so you know where to place the answer! if the question is incorrect, then the answer becomes all over the place, and very difficult to answer correctly ... guess where some folks make mistakes in the tax code?
