I don't take Nexium!

Any more!  I used to!  I used to take 2 of them purple pills a day PLUS 2 pantoprazole per day (both as prescribed by my intestinal doc).  AND I'd pop TUMS all day long like they were candy.

I had severe GERD, bad enough that I would wake up in the middle of the night with acid in my throat and my trachea would close up as a reflex and I couldn't breathe.  it was kind of like an asthma attack, but wasn't caused by the same thing asthma is caused by and so inhalers wouldn't open my trachea.

this went on for a sevearl years.  I also had severe abdominal pain (which hasn't 100% completely gone away) and had my gall bladder removed because it was full of stones and was causing me pain.

I was also on high blood pressure meds.

BUT! now I've lost 73 pounds (so far) and I've been mostly pain free ever since!  I'm no longer taking ANY PPIs AND I'm completely off of my high blood pressure meds!

I weighed almost 310 pounds and I'm 5'9" a year ago - BMI was 45.5.  Here's a pic of me in London in mid March of 2015:

Here's a pic of me a couple of weeks ago:

I had lap band surgery in June 2015.  I had lost 30 pounds before the surgery and over 40 since then and I'm still losing!

NO MORE NEXIUM!!!!  NO MORE XFORGE!  NO MORE WAKING UP NOT BEING ABLE TO BREATHE!!!

Way to go, Beagle!!  I could stand to be lighter, but ...

I've been taking Nexium for over a decade due to an uncorrected hiatal hernia developed during an appendicitis attack that ended with a ruptured appendix.  Thanks to the wonders of military medicine, I was told to eat however many antacids I needed to eat to make the symptoms go away.

Years later, a civilian doctor discovered my Barrett's condition, which thankfully hasn't worsened since.  I've been told to plan on taking Nexium the rest of my life.

I've been on various PPI treatments since I had a motorcycle accident in my early 20's and ruptured my diaphragm.

I'm on Pantoprazole at the moment on an as needed basis.  It comes and goes in severity but I know if indulge I'm going to pay the price which helps me keep it in check to a certain degree.

Man, that's an incredible difference in a year, a real achievement!

What I want to know though is how come you were in London and I didn't get to hear about it?

Thanks Ken!

Bouy - thanks!  I made an announcement here on the forum that I was going to be on a short business trip to the UK.  I don't think I still have your email address or I would have emailed you about it.

I was only there 4 days. I flew into London, but the plant I was visiting was in Cheltenham.  I only got to spend 1/2 day my last day in London sightseeing.  not very long!

Thanks guys!  I am much healthier than I was a year ago!  And I look forward to losing some more!  my goal is to be at or below 200.  at this point my weight loss is quite slow (about 1 pound per week), but as long as I keep losing I'm hoping to make that goal.

of course according to the BMI scale I'd have to get down to 165 in order to be in the 'upper normal' range.  but I think if I can get to 200 I'll be "close enough for gob'nent work!"

That's good news Reece.  Must admit, the London pics were quite worrying, but you're well on the way now. A pound a week is fine, that way you're less likely to put the weight back on. Keep it going!

Straight from one of the books about the breed:

Beagles need much more exercise than most people give them, which is why you see so many fat Beagles with health problems. Though they're often kept in city apartments or condos, they should not be.

...

One more thing.....most Beagles are chowhounds, so keep your trash cans out of reach and never set your plate of food down where he can get to it.

Good to see that you're reversing the effects!
(Now stay away from my becan!)

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Way to go.... prescription drugs are not a cure, they just mask the symptoms and create more problems.... which result in more prescriptions and on and on the story goes......

Awesome. You're looking good, I'm glad you're feeling better! I take Dexilant. I am 5'9" and weigh about 165+/- but if I take anything else I have reflux all the time. I know about the waking up in the middle of the night. I tend to aspirate a little with acid. It still happens sometimes with the Dexilant but not nearly as much as with other meds. My insurance made me try something else in January. I was taking it in the AM, Zantac in the afternoon, then Tums in the evening. It was awful and it took about a week for the Dexilant to start working well again. I really don't think it is working as good as it was before they made me try something else. If we have chili or something I still need a Zantac in the evening, it isn't a PPI so you can take both. I only take the Dexilant once a day. I don't want to take it twice a day.
Back in the 60s and 70s I remember my dad suffered a LOT with reflux. They didn't have PPIs then. He went through bottle after bottle of something called Kermlin antacid tablets.

It is good to feel better. Sometimes you don't realize how bad you felt until you feel better!

Mega congrats, Beag! That's quite an achievment.

(Proton pump inhibitors are powerful and effective drugs -in widespread use here and around the world as evidenced by fellow forum members- but long term use of PPI's has adverse effects.)
