My neighbour threatened me - Please help.
My neighbour threatened me. I know this forum is full help. Yesterday I was working on SONAR. Didn't notice the time - it was 1:20 AM. Two of them came and threatened to break my "Sound System" I managed to buy 2 pcs of Behringer 2030A. But now I have to buy a headphone. Not having much of cash. What can be my options? [Also confused about closed back / open / semi-open etc..] What do I do? Regards Snehankur

If you have to work on headphones at night a good choice would be ATH M50's, they go on sale sometimes. You might also look at getting a VRM box to simulate rooms and speakers through your headphones. Just always keep an eye on the volume levels because it's easy to get carried away with loud levels through headphones and you can damage your ears. Lots of breaks required.
Yeah always a good idea to respect your neighbors at night. It can be very stressful when you have to get up early for work and there's a thump thump thump from a kick drum next door. I've been driven nuts like this before, banging on the wall bleary eyed and yelling like a miserable old fart, lol. So I'm acutely aware of people being asleep when I want to make music at night.

Move! No, I am just kidding, of course. Headphones, to me, while important don't have to be the best and most expensive!!! Some people will argue that point. From my own experiences I have learned that MOST finished mixs are 90% of the time done on speaker monitors. Get the best phones you can afford that are comfortable for long periods of time and use them for those times when it will be a nuisance to anyone to hear you. Just keep in mind that what you need to do under the phones should be tasks concerning choosing fx, adjusting tempos, correcting wrong notes, adjusting loops, any technical things. Phones can get you in the neighborhood of a good mix but my experiences taught me that speakers are crucial to finished mixs. Mixing should be done with the speakers and checked on several different types of speakers. All this can be done in the waking hours with the hopes your not disturbing people around you too much. Phones as I use them are for tracking and for zeroing in on trouble issues. And, PLEASE, watch those levels while under the phones. I have said before to google ear fatigue and understand what you risk when listening thru either speakers or phones!

Normally I remain careful. Yesterday I didn't notice the time. I get up around 4.30-5.00AM and I can only get this 9.30 PM - .. for my music. BTW what about Closed-back, open, semi open type of headphone?

I use closed back when tracking live. But, I have found open back to work better for me when mixing. If you plan on mixing with headphones, get a decent pair and use the Sonarworks Headphone calibration plugin. That made a world of difference in my mixes. Just my $.02 YMMV

Open back shouldn't bother your neighbors (your head would explode first). I like the sound of my AKG 240s I got fairly cheap - they sounded better than the close-backeds in the same $100 price range I tried. Another solution - I had a friend crashing at a studio in the bad side of San Antonio while they worked on their first album. One night late there was a heavy knocking on the door. Paul yelled through the bolted door, and whomever was on the other side started yelling to open up, they knew the owner, yada yada yada. The owner had wisely left a .45, and Paul chambered a round - a very loud sound. There was an "oh man" and they left quickly.
https://soundcloud.com/a-pleasure-dome http://www.bnoir-film.com/ there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Hi. I have and still use an AKG K240 (I think they are about 13 years old, but still as new). They are quite neutral, but I have problems when wearing them for a long time (many hours). They make my ears sweat I just bought a set of Beyerdynamics DT770 (80 Ohm), and I can now work for (too many) hours without a sweat (pun intended). All the best.

I have used a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros for around 3 years for mixing when neighbours are around (which is often). FWIW, people who've listened to the resultant mixes on their own various devices have said, "Good mix!" They seem to quite neutral. Also very comfortable to wear for a long time, even on my fat head.

Since they sometimes come up, I suggest staying away from the Sennheiser HD280 Pros (which I own and are about 100$). Being closed they have to be tight and so become uncomfortable after an hour or so. Closed also makes them bass heavy. They're fantastic phones for listening in noisy environments like on a plane, and the overall sound is great, but I wouldn't buy them for mixing. AKG and Beyerdynamics are the classic studio phones which I'd look at if I were buying new ones.

For tracking I use closed backs. For long tweaking mixs, doing edits, etc., I use a light weight open back. Beware, closed backs create ear fatigue much quicker and tend to accentuate bass frequencies! I don't really get caught up in brand names as much as weight, comfort, and frequency response of the headphones you choose.

FWIW legendary engineer Andrew Scheps recently said in an interview that he completed a mix on his laptop using cheap Sony headphones that his mastering engineer told him didn't even need mastering. I once spoke to a guy in New York, a sound engineer who mixes for movies, who told me that he does everything on headphones. I guess it's possible if you're experienced enough to know how YOUR cans color the sound and how it translates to speakers.

I imagine it's just like Beethoven. Scheps probably has a pretty good idea of what he's doing in his head, even without phones or speakers. And Jeff Evans says he gets a pretty good idea of the quality of his mix by watching the dance of the needles of his vu meters. That certainly won't disturb the neighbours.

It may have been an innocent thing on your part that in the heat of the moment you may have lost track of time while doing your music ... It can happen to the best of us.... The fact that you were threatened by 2 people on your doorstep brings this thing into Major Red Flag territory... IMHO, You would have been much better off if the police had knocked on your door because they would have treated you in a much more civil manner . You would have been a low impact call for them in the scope of their shift that night. After a little chit chat you would have been in a better position than you are now because they would have had to document the nature of the call ... Chances are they would have given you a polite warning , also there would be a record of a possible Rub w your neighbor's in the making ... OP , you need to take what happened seriously and do everything you can to nip this one in the bud . If money is super tight for you right now , do a little thrift shopping or go to a Good Will and grab a cheap set of used cans just to start the ball rolling on keeping the peace ... I sincerely hope that This Rub blows over for all folks concerned ... Kenny

I use open headphones for mixing. I turn on a radio and if I cannot hear it, then the headphones are too loud. Recording my vocals to backing tracks is different. Then you need closed. But you will always need to listen to your final mix on speakers.

As a software engineer I can write my programs on any crap which can be called a computer (I have developed AZ Controller on Centrino based notebook, with 120GB disk and 2GB of RAM, under Linux). As a noob musician, I could not follow groove3/youtube mixing tutorials till I have bought Shure headphones (over $200). I have a good store in the near, with almost ALL currently available mass production music related equipment already prepared to be tested. On one side I can choose what I want within 1-2 hours, on the other my choice is never in the thought price range Extrapolating that experience, if you are already good in music production, you probably can work with cheap equipment. Otherwise some "smart" staff is required to "help" you. My situation is such that I need closed headphones. First 1-2 month my head had to adopt to use them for more than 1-2 hours. Now I have no problem to wear them all the day (periodically exchanging the air inside...).

As far as annoying your neighbor, closed vs. open headphones don't matter. Not unless he sleeps next to your mixing desk. Open-back cans are typically higher-fidelity, but as long as you do your final mix on speakers you can still do the bulk of your mixing on headphones just fine. What I would do, though, is include the price of a good deadbolt lock in your gear budget.

If you go to your favorite music store you'll generally find that the 3 most popular headphones are all $99. AKG K240, Sennheiser HD 280, and Sony MDR-7506. Two are closed and the AKG is semi-open. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them if you've got $100 to spend. Shop around and you might find one or the other on sale. If you have the bucks, then go for the AKG K701s , Beyerdynamic DT880s, or Sennheiser HD 650s or a few other offerings. gabo

I would also invest in a cheap audio level meter that would tell you how loud you are playing. It's an invaluable tool. http://www.jaycar.com.au/...d-Level-Meter/p/QM1589This is just an example. I'm sure you would be able to get it much cheaper where you are.

ProjectM I recommend these: http://www.headfonia.com/superlux-hd668b/ Supercheap, my neighbours love 'em and they are pretty darn good even compared to expensive alternatives!
I opted for the HD681 because they are in the sonarworks plugin (which I am trying now) See Links above from my previous post. They sound good with and without the plugin. The plugin does seem to smooth out the rough spots. That being said, these are not going to replace the $100 and above headphones most of you have. It will work for me (a hobbyist who has a different day job). I will probably go ahead and shell out the $69.00 for the plug-in. It will also not replace experience. This will not automatically make you into Bob Ludwig!
