Using a foot pedal for continuous controller
I want to use a foot pedal to control the velocity x-fade (CC2) Is this possible and how do you set it up? I am using the newest edition of Sonar Professional and Vienna Instruments. I found a foot controller called logidy emi3 that you can connect an expression pedal to and connect to computer via USB but I don't know if this would work. Will Sonar or Vienna Instruments recognize it?

Sonar will recognise any MIDI coming in from any MIDI interface/port enabled in preferences. Exactly what that MIDI then does depends on the synth or plugin it's controlling. If the settings in Vienna allow CC2 to do what you want and the interface is configured to use CC2 for the expression pedal there's no reason in Sonar why it won't work. If you already have a keyboard controller with an expression pedal in then there's probably no need to get a foot controller/interface, just plug an expression pedal into the keyboard and configure it. M-Audio expression pedals are cheap, and work fine. I've been using one connected to whatever controller keyboard I'm using to send CCs into Sonar for years

Thanks tlw, Vienna does allow CC2. My keyboard only has a sustain pedal input and thus the need for an expression pedal.

Don't know why my links aren't showing up in the post...? What I found is called "Midi Expression". Has anyone used it?

I was told I could use a foot controller to control CC2 but I can’t seem to get it to work. Please help. Here is what I have set up… I am using a moog expression pedal connected to my PC via a MIDI Expression device from audiofront.net. My source controller in Vienna Instruments is velocity x-fade set to CC2. My MIDI expression pedal is set to MIDI channel 1, CC2. In Sonar Professional I set up an automation lane set to MIDI channel 1, controller = 2-Breath. What am I doing wrong?

Just to check... Do you have MIDI track, with input set to the MIDI expression device and the output to Vienna?

1) Do you have your midi device enabled in preferences? 2) Is your PC receiving data from it? Use midi ox or some other utility to check incoming midi. 3) On soft synths I have 2 tracks, the bottom is midi and the top has an icon of a keyboard + midi. On the keyboard + midi track add an automation lane. In the automation lane select the controller you want - when you select the down arrow towards the bottom of the list you should see your soft synth listed and when you select that there should be a list of controllers and that might be nested, select the appropriate controller. 4) Right click in the box that shows the controller value in the automation lane and select Remote Control. Select Learn and move your foot controller - that should set it up. HTH.

I figured out what was wrong. I had the input on my MIDI track set to my digital piano. Once I changed the input to "all inputs" it recognized the foot pedal. Great news is that I don't even need an automation track!
