Having trouble with an M-Audio keyboard

I am having trouble with an M-Audio keystation 88-es I recently just bought. I hooked it up via USB to my computer into a MIDI track. It's getting a signal but I'm not able to hear it through my AI speakers. I've been doing some reading on this and watching youtube videos but I'm not having any luck. Can anyone give me more simplified directions on this or send me some good links?

I know this sounds a silly question, but have you got a soft synth on your MIDI track?

Definitely not a silly question. Let me reiterate. Ive been inserting a soft synth which creates a track that is getting a signal but I'm not getting any sound.

    More potential silly questions.

Have you selected a patch in the the soft synth (Which soft synth?)

Have you tried the on screen keyboard to ensure that your sound is working?
      Views > Virtual Controller/Keyboard

Does the Audio show in the output track of the software synth You may need to split the track if you have inserted as a Simple instrument Right click split instrument

Have you select the M-Audio 88-es as a midi device in preferences

Is you audio card selected in Audio preferences?

It give me the option for an Electric Piano as a soft synth (which I'm actually looking for a Grand Piano).
I have not tried this "Onscreen Keyboard" option.
I don't know how to see if the Audio is shown in the output track of the software synth.
I have selected the M-Audio 88-es as a midi device in Preferences.

Can't I just hook the 5 pin MIDI cord from the keyboard to the AI and play it that way?

It's already getting a signal from the keyboard via USB, so switching to MIDI probably won't make a difference.
Make sure in Track View the In/Out's are set up properly. Easy signal path for now is direct the Out to the Master out
back to your interface. Of course you do have the outputs of the interface running to some powered speakers or an amp/speaker combo for monitoring-or headphone out.

Okay, I want to thank everybody for the help. So I finally got the VST I need and the sound coming through the speakers. Next issue is that it is breaking up as I play. Not the whole time but still pretty frequently. Is it my processor maybe? Anybody got any ideas.

Do you have an audio interface or are you using on-board sound and/or an internal sound card?

It would probably help if you provided a little more information on your set-up.

    1. CPU =
    2. RAM =
    3. Sound Card =
    4. Driver Mode = (ASIO. MME, WMD etc)
    5. Sample or Buffer size =
    6. OS =

    Thanks

And don't forget to set the MIDI channel to OMNI or specifically to the MIDI channel the track is set to.
