Hello I'm New. Please Help!!!!
Ok so I have many questions about using Sonar...so far I am finding it very frustrating and NOT user friendly. Anyway my most pressing question is this. 1. When I try to export a midi file I have mixed to a wave file, there is no sound on the wave file. I have checked all sound cards etc. I suspect it is in the way I am "selecting" tracks but I cannot work out what I am doing wrong. I have followed all the instructions in the help menu but I can't work out how to get the selected tracks to appear in the bottom left box listed as: "Source/Buses Tracks" I am thinking that this is why there is no sound when I play it as a wave file. Can anyone help please. Thanks Julie

If I am understanding you, there should be an option that says "What you hear". I think we need a little more info about how you have your tracks assigned. Are you using a master buss? Things of that nature. By the way, welcome aboard! Sonar is not easy to learn but the people in this forum are some of the best support around. I would also suggest tutorial videos both on the Cakewalk site and YouTube. There is a ton of knowledge to get you started there. Some are vids about older versions of Sonar but they are still relevant. Give us some more detailed info and be patient. Someone here will get back with you.

Hi. Which version of SONAR do you have? What kind of Audio Interface do you have? Do you have sound before you try to export? If you only want to export one track, solo it, and then you could route it to Audio Interface out 1&2. Ctrl+a (select all. In this case the whole length of the song.), Export. Select Main Outputs, and try to export as .wave. Hope it helps. All the best. Ps. It is always helpful if you put your specs in your signature (SONAR version, Windows version, Cpu, RAM, Audio Interface. See mine below) It is done on your control panel at the top tight on this (and every page while you are logged in here)

Hello and welcome . You are not the first and will mot be the last one who has difficulties making the first steps with a DAW. To help you it needs some more info´s , buit I will try a shot into the "blue". Have you marked the midi track and the midi (vst= instrument) before you bounced it? if yes: Have you marked the area in the timeline? if yes: Then go to track-bounce tracks (not the whole mix)in stereo or mono, with fx and buss or not no dithering and important- choose the track where it has to be bounced to Also mark the option :hear during bouncing or so So you hear immediately if the source tracks are marked right and you are in the right mood. Hope it helps Pragi

Ok thanks for getting back to me. My only goal right now using Sonar is to make changes on midi files then export them as a wave or mp3 so I can upload them to my ipad...to use at a gig on THURSDAY...time is my enemy right now. I guess the first thing you need to know is that I know NOTHING about Sonar. So when you ask about a Master buss...I don't know what you mean. Also "what you hear" is that an option somewhere and if so where can I find it. Also I have been watching youtube and sonar videos for 2 days and I really can't find answers to specific questions. And as I am new and don't know the "lingo" of this software then it is possible I am not asking the right questions. I wish I could find a step by step guide starting from the beginning A further question is: can I input a mp3 and/or a wave file so I can make changes to it as a midi then convert it back again? Or does it always have to be a midi file. I am desperate for help as I have 30 songs i need to sing on thursday and I haven't even got them on my ipad yet.

Might be obvious but are you playing MIDI through a soft synth (virtual instrument) or are you triggering a hardware synth? By default only virtual instruments will be included in an export unless you route audio from a hardware synth back into SONAR. If its a virtual instrument and you hear it in SONAR, make sure you select everything in your project before you export (or select nothing) - then choose the "what you hear" preset.

Hi Noel, Firstly sorry for the reply above. I tried to send a print screen and tha't what came up. ...what is a syth? In my attempts to solve these problems I have come across soft syth. I don't know what it is but I may have selected something that is obstructing sound. So To answer your question, no I should not have a virtual instrument, and if I have accidentally selected it, how do I unselect it. If I start there and try again, maybe it might work. Thanks Julie

Hi John, I just looked at the glossary and soft syth or syth isn't there!!! So it doesn't help with my question above. I don't want a virtual instrument but I may have changed something under soft syth accidently. I have my computer connected the tv so I can see it better. All the sound works fine on the computer and tv. What settings should I be using under soft syth if I don't want to use virtual instruments? I have purchased sonar artist. and have window 8 thanks julie

There are two kinds of synths the first is a hardware synth the kind used live. They can also be used with Sonar. The other kind is a Softsynth or software synth. One that is programed to run within Sonar. They are essentially the same in what they produce which is sound. However they very different in how they function. The hardware synth is like a guitar its a full fledged musical instrument. It can be controlled by Sonar via MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) Sonar is a MIDI sequencer as well as a audio workstation. By hooking up a hardware synth to Sonar with MIDI you can control it. A soft synth is run within Sonar and uses MIDI internally to control it. I will stop here to leave you time to digest what I just wrote. Please ask any questions you may have. One at a time.

Hi Julie, It's not syth, it's synth. (short for synthesiser) 1. When I try to export a midi file I have mixed to a wave file, there is no sound on the wave file.
So... Is it safe to assume that if you simply press the play button in Sonar you CAN hear your mix, but when you try to export it you get a silent wav file? Ok so I have many questions about using Sonar...so far I am finding it very frustrating and NOT user friendly.
Sonar is a complete recording studio in a single package, imagine being left alone in Abbey Road with no engineers or musicians or producers..... It's user friendly IF you know what you're doing, but can be confusing for beginners. But don't worry, that's what we're here for.

Darn it Karyn, you did in a few words what I was trying to do in a whole lot of words and far better to boot. I was just about to edit my post to add the full word of synthesizer. To Julie we are here as a peer to peer forum to help fellow members find their way with Sonar. its what we do. We do it well too. No question is too basic. No question is too simple. And no question is too complicated.

Hey Divas: Don't despair!! We'll get you sorted out, just hang tough. Try this: 1. Open your midi file in sonar. When you play it do you hear it? If you do then do this: 2. Click on the number of each track you want to render while holding down the cntrl key on your keyboard. The track number is found on the left hand side of each track. 3. While still holding the cntrl key click on the software synthesizer that's feeding the tracks. It should have a name like "Kontakt" or "sampletank". 4. Right up above the tracks are a list of names: view/options/tracks. Click on "tracks" and you'll get a drop-down menu. 5. From the drop down menu click "bounce to tracks". A new screen will appear. Click "OK". Sonar will now render your midi files to a new track which will appear at the bottom of your project. It will be namesd something like "5 New track". That new track is a wav file that contains your audio data. 6. To the right of each track name are two letters, "m" and "s". Click the "s" on your new track. Click on the audio track too (it will look like a big squiggly line). It should turn light grey. 7. On the upper left of Sonar click on "file". A drop-down menu will appear. Go down to "export". Click it. 8. Click "audio". A new dialog box will appear. 9. At the very top of that box set the location you want your file to reside in (I usually create a folder on my desk top). 10. Then name your file (usually the song name). 11. Under "type of file" choose either MP3 (though you'll need to buy the encoder to use that option), or Wave. 12. Decide what sample rate and bit depth you want. Just to be safe use 41,000 for the sample rate and 16 for the bit depth. 13. Click "export" 14. Go look in your destination folder and you should see your song!! I hope this helps. If not then let us know. Good luck!

Hi Jude77, Firstly thank you and thanks to everyone trying to help me....I'm usually really smart with tech stuff but this has bought me to tears. Anyway I am following your steps and I'm up to step 3. I don't know where the software synthesizer that's feeding the tracks is located. I also can't find the "Kontakt" or "sampletank". 3. While still holding the cntrl key click on the software synthesizer that's feeding the tracks. It should have a name like "Kontakt" or "sampletank".

Divas, you can't find Kontakt / Sampletank as these are simply example of soft synth names. Instead, you should see Dimension LE / Rapture LE, etc, which are soft synts that came with Sonar Artist. EDIT : Correction - Dimension LE / Rapture LE are also not part of Sonar Artist. You should see Cakewalk TTS, Sound center, a list of instruments that are bundled with Sonar Artist : (scroll down to Instruments) http://www.cakewalk.com/P...s/SONAR/Versions#start

All this seems way too complicated. The point of all the selecting is that Sonar only exports what you have selected. This makes it really quick to export different versions but is very confusing if you don't realize it. If you click somewhere in the middle of track view (usually the middle of your screen anyway) to make sure it has focus and then hit CTRL+A on your keyboard, it will select everything just like in Word or Windows Explorer. Always do this before exporting. If you want, you can then specify a time range across the ruler on the top of the track view window by dragging across it.
Now export and in the "source category" choose either "what you hear" or "all outputs" and select your soundcard output. This should do the trick, regardless of what synth you were using.
On a separate note, being a full time performing musician, I would seriously consider canceling the gig on Thursday. You need more time to prepare and get comfortable with what you've prepared. Just some well intended advice born from experience.

Hi Sanderxpander, I can't cancel on thursday. But I need about 30 irish songs ready to go before then.....ARGGGGG. Hence my stress and frustration. So I followed your instructions to the letter. My options under source category are: Tracks Entire Mix Buses Hardware output Clips

Entire Mix or Hardware Output should work. For the latter, if it gives you multiple options, pick the output pair you've been listening to.

For export, Sanderxpander's method above is the easiest. To the "soft synth" point - For import/editing, SONAR will automatically insert the TTS-1 synth (will play up to 16 channels of MIDI). In order to do this, SONAR cannot see any MIDI output device... 2 steps: 1) In SONAR preferences (Edit->Preferences, or "P"). On the left side, MIDI->Devices make sure that all outputs are not checked. Then hit "Apply" and "Close" Looks like this: 2) When you right click a MIDI file, in Windows Explorer, choose "Open With->Choose Default Program..." The popup looks like this (and may already be assigned, but this is just in case): Now if you double click a .mid file (or right click and Open With->SONAR Artist), SONAR Artist should launch and route that MIDI to the TTS-1 and to your audio outputs automatically. Are you able to hear the MIDI at that point?

Just for the sake of clarity... for exporting, if the MIDI file has been opened via the above so it is loaded in the TTS-1, export steps are: 1. Hit Ctrl-A to select all 2. File->Export->Audio... 3. The pop up looks like below. For the sake of time, you want to name the file, choose "Wave" as the type, and depending on playback, 16-bit is probably fine (files are physically smaller than 32 or 24 bit, but you can choose 16/24/32 there). Can cross the other bridges in due order, but as you are pressed for time I will stick to the basics for now.

Sorry, been really busy with a project with a deadline myself! I see you are in the best of hands here so I will stay out of the way! Too many responses will just confuse you more. They have you going in the right direction. Try to stay calm and hang in there. But, I must say you have a pretty daunting task of producing 30 songs before Thursday! Not impossible, just follow these directions. I always tell anyone I try to help to write down the steps as you go in your own words and lingo. That sometimes helps. Good luck and I will check in later but for now you are well taken care of. Thanks, guys!

Or you can call customer support and they will help you out in a few minutes :) It will probably by quicker than going back and forth on the forum trying to describe what you are doing. Most likely your core issue is that you do not have a synth inserted into your project. Depending on what sounds you want you want you may be able to get away with just TTS1. Here is a good article on using virtual instruments in SONAR. Its intended for new users like you so should help get you up to speed with the terminology and mechanism for using synths in SONAR.

Hey Julie: I hope Support got you sorted out. What you're trying to do is really very simple, and after you do it a few times you'll have it down pat. It's not nearly as daunting as feels right now, and you'll have all of your songs ready to go quickly once you get the hang. I think Sanderxpander gave you a much more streamlined approach than I did, but if you still need help keep asking. The guys here are super supportive. Best of luck with your gig Thursday.
