Using step sequencer with Kontakt

Using step sequencer with Kontakt

I am unable to create a step sequencer when I want to use Kontakt or Studio drummer.  When I click on the button for step sequencer nothing happens.  The sounds show up to my keyboard, but I want to use the step sequencer to put parts in while I practice to understand the feeling of a particular rhythm.  Any insights?  Is this common?

    Did you follow the information here: https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X3&language=3&help=Views.19.html
     
    It will only work on a midi track, so make sure that's the currently selected track.

    Thanks I figured that out but now I am getting stuck on how to use the step sequencer and change patterns.  I have been trying to set the song pointer to the position where I would like the sequencer clip to copy to but it seems to rewrite the entire sequence with only that pattern.  I only wanted the new pattern from the song pointer forward.  I am thinking wrong but I haven't figured out why yet any ideas?
     
    Also the audio rewiring I haven't really dealt with that first.  I want to get midi solid and then I will worry about the audio.  I am trying to lay down battery parts but they seem to rewrite over my previously completed work behind the song pointer.

    Right-click on the Record button and enable "Sound On Sound".
