Sound the Trumpets!!!
So, I have this song that is in a Latin sort of theme. I've recorded most of the tracks and suddenly I can hear it crying out for a trumpet part. I don't normally use brass of any kind in my songs but this one is screaming trumpet. I'll probably not use brass very much in my music going forward, however, when I do I want it to sound great! What do you guys suggest that won't break the bank but sounds great! I'm sure I don't need lots of bells and whistles or a large inventory of brass instruments...'just the basics with a great sound!

Rapture Session, under the D-Pro User Imports - under "Brass" has some trumpets that might do the trick...if you're not looking to spend any money. Or you could just use D-Pro directly with the same patches...

Yeah, I checked those out. They really don't sound authentic to me. I may have to spend some $$$ but I want to keep it as low as I can and still have great brass.

If you have full Kontakt, you've already got adequate brass for casual use. Sure, there's little in the factory content that's up to the standards of high-end third-party libraries. But there are a lot of instruments in there, including many that you won't use often enough to justify buying a dedicated library for, e.g. trombones, trumpets and tubas. Dimension Pro, IIRC, had a couple usable brass patches, but I haven't looked at it in a long time.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

If you need a "one-off" solo trumpet that sounds authentic, I'd consider asking someone to play/record the real thing.

Wavesfactory has a nice muted one (if that would work for you) for 20 Euro. They also have a Flugelhorn. Embertone has it's Chapman Trumpet. It's really more of an orchestral trumpet, but you might be able to make it work. It's $30. EDIT: I'm assuming you have the full version of Kontakt. If not, then those won't work.

The special edition 1 of Vienna Instruments has a great trumpet. Also very good horn and trombone. The whole shebang is under 300.00 and you do get a lot of usable instruments, including the best eng. horn I've heard. Also timpani and pizz bass are great. However, in my experience their stuff has so many problems it's hardly worth using (takes forever to load, instruments come in late, hard to blend, system crashes). There may be ways around those problems, though. I just got too frustrated to put up with it. Although I will used them as a last resort.

cclary, what are the D-pro user imports? I already use the trumpets in the regular brass collection in DP, but I don't know the ones you are talking about. How can I get them? I too need better trumpets (doesn't everyone?).

Session horns pro (or session horns if you can't spend the $$$) should do the trick. You might find something cheaper that is good enough if you search around, too...The best libraries, however, are fairly $$$$$$....If I had the extra dough, I'd look at Sample Modeling's trumpet (and other products); great physical modeling, but expensive, for sure.

Man, I wish I could do that! I recorded a 10 piece band once that included a 5 piece horn section...FANTASTIC! The problem is that the leader moved elsewhere and I have no contact with him or any of the members. He's a great horn arranger as also...oh well.

Well, the Session Horns ($99) will work in the FREE Kontakt Player..... also, someone might have a voucher they're not using and you can get a better deal (if you go that route).

I got the Groove3 vid on Session Horns Pro and had a chance to add a preliminary horn section to one of my songs just to see how it sounds in the mix. Wow! I'm really happy with Session Horns Pro. It's exactly what I was looking for. Really easy to setup and use. Definitely one of the better purchases I've made for the studio. Again, thanks to everyone for your input...greatly appreciated.
