Sonar X3 Platinum MIDI sounds not working

So I made the leap and upgraded from X1 to X3 Platinum.  I have the M-Audio Oxygen 49 for a midi controller.  When I insert a midi track it seems to work fine for some of the sound patches, but others seem to not work.  Specifically, I made this leap so that I can record a country album myself, just to show myself I can do that and I"m not limited to pop and rock music.  The reason I upgraded was to access the drums, fiddle, steel guitar and the BANJO.  When I choose the banjo for an instrument, it still sounds like a piano.  Does anyone know what would be causing this problem for me?

I'm just hitting insert midi track, then on the third thing down of the options, where it chooses the instrument, i choose the banjo

what thing is the third thing down controlling? (midi data doesn't produce sound on its own, the midi data needs to be sent to a synth to produce sound)

okay so when you insert a midi track...the section that is normally the sends has 3 items....
top one if clicked has None or defaults 1-16.
middle one only gives the option to None
The bottom one if clicked gives you a whole bunch of instrument options.  THis is where i'm clicking the banjo option.

Down on the bottom I have in from my controller and out is to Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.

I completely respect your desire to want to get a banjo out of the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, and you should be able to, but that is by far the worst sounding and functioning way you could possible get any sound at all from a midi enabled instrument, hardware or software.

Banjo sounds aren't common but the TTS-1 synth provided by Cakewalk should have one and should still be better than the MS GS Wavetable one. Try not using a midi track, but inserting a synth, and choose TTS-1. You can still play/record/edit midi but the software synthesizer TTS-1 will be making the sound.

On a somewhat (un)related note, I just remembered this joke about the banjo player who went to go shopping in the inner city.

Halfway through his shopping trip he realized that he left his banjo on the backseat of his car, in plain sight. Fear grips his heart as he rushes back to where he left his car. When he gets close, he can already see it.... the door window is smashed in. With leaden feet he walks the last few meters and looks into his car and sees.....

I have to agree,
as I read from the beginning of this thread I kept saying,,,, please don't tell me he is using Microsoft GS instruments.
you will find much higher quality, better synths and I believe a banjo in dimension pro.
although depending on your set up, you may find you run in to latency issues
(you hit a note on the keyboard / and the note comes out 1/10 second later)

good luck on your country album man.
