Z3TA+2 : dragging .cmp arp file onto arp window kills UI controls

Here's the original post (in the Cakewalk Instruments subforum):

http://forum.cakewalk.com/Z3TA-2-dragging-cmp-arp-file-onto-arp-window-kills-UI-controls-m3387966.aspx

I was able to confirm the bug. I haven't requested a CWBRN because I feel that's the right of the user who first posts a bug. I bumped the OP a week later, but Paul never returned to it. Here's a copy and paste from the OP above:

Paul P:

In Z3TA+2, when you select a "MIDI Arp nn" pattern, it loads a .cmp file.

If you drag the .cmp file instead from the windows folder onto the arp window, not only is the pattern not loaded, but all controls in the 2 upper thirds of the synth's UI disappear into black holes.  Clicking on one control brings it back and closing and reopening the synth brings them all back.

Does this happen with anyone else ?

My reply:

Confirmed for the latest version. Dragging in Arp .MID files works fine, but dragging an Arp .CMP file from Explorer into the Arp causes ALL controls in the upper two-thirds (anything that's clickable) to disappear. Clicking within each control brings it back, but it's easy to miss some of the small ones. Having to close, then reopen, to get them back is a pain.

This is the CCC-updated version? I just used that version yesterday for the first time in earnest and found the channels were running hot (like +22dB distorted hot) with the Z3TA+2 limiter engaged on presets I had used previously. When I get a chance later I will circle back to both of these.

Yup. Latest version. 2.2.2 Thanks for taking a look. If Paul doesn't circle back, I'll file it.

With the recipe above this is confirmed in both the VST3 and VST2 versions of Z3TA+2 (v2.2.2) dragging .cmp files from either the z3ta+ or Z3TA+ 2 directories. The GUI looks like this after the drag/drop:

Also, have been doing a quick check on the "hot output" issue, and it seems that the Master Limiter in Z3TA+2 is not engaging properly (if at all). To test this I simply cycled through several of the Z3TA+2 "Showcase" patches, and after finding a hot one I would note the track peaks, reset them, and shut off the Z3TA+2 Limiter. Playing the same patch again in most cases had identical peak values with the Limiter shut off.

I cannot find where drag and drop is supported for .cmp files. I can find a reference at the top of page 46 for drag and drop support of MIDI files.

If drag/drop is not supported for them, the application should not react to them. An unsupported file type should cause no "reaction"... as case in point, I just tried to drag/drop a .jpg file and although the "+" sign appeared over the arpeggiator, nothing happened inside Z3TA+2.

How it should respond is the question. The documentation is silent about dropping jpg files too. The documentation is pretty clear about what type of file the feature does support though.

I don't want to be rude, but I'm not sure what part of mettelus' response you don't understand.

If an action is not supported, the app should do NOTHING.

If dragging a .cmp arp file into Z3TA+2 is not supported, Z3TA+2 should do nothing.

In this case, Z3TA+2 recognizes the file type and TRIES to do something...and fails rather spectacularly. That's a bug in anybody's book. The answer is not to tell a user "don't do it".

Something's amiss here. The fix could be as simple as ignoring the drop. Instead of telling the user not to do it, tell the app.

Or, this failure caused by a violation of a boundary condition could point to something really wrong.

    Don't know.

But I like drag-n-drop. Use it many times per day. It's a natural part of my workflow. I didn't find this particular anomaly, but in general, I keep my non-distribution (personal) files separate from, say, SONAR's files. It's often easier to d-n-d from Explorer than it is to use an app's/plugin's file manager.

I am not sure what the OP's use case is, but I have to assume it is fully legit.

Then don't be rude. Don't assume I lack understanding about anything written in this thread. I made no recommendation about how to deal with this issue.
