Love the tune and the production.  Killer bass.  I always use "audience perspective" with my drums...just a personal preference.  But this was kinda like listening to an old Beatles mix where things are panned all over the place.  The snare was hard left on my system and the kick was almost non existent.  Very interesting although a bit disconcerting:-)

I think you'll like the comparison that's coming up Tom..it reminded me of Level 42 (minus the slap bass) I could imagine some far away Mike Lindup vocals going on . I like 7/4, it's got a groove all of it's own, I got used to it listening to a lot of '90's Sting albums. Cool stuff.

Great groove Tom. I would have liked to hear a tad more kick and less cymbal late on mix-wise but just my personal taste.

Next in the 'Divergent' series of movies - 'Detergent' .
Last in the series will be 'Indulgent' starring Tom.
How's that? Do I get the prize?
Only kidding though I like it and there's some great playing

James called this one pretty well...indulgently Level 42 (does that one count?).

    • Snare could could use a little more beef, and I might center it a bit more.
    • Cymbals may be HPF a bit too much.
    • Where'd the kick go?
Nice keyboard work on this. I like your mix of instruments on this one. Cool song too.

    Really nice tune Tom.

If you are ever up to letting me play live drums on it, it would be a fun challenge for me and I think it would be interesting for you to hear. Just PM me if you are interested.

Really, really nice playing and a great song. I feel completely unqualified to critique this song except to say that I missed the kick drum and to my damaged ears the upper frequencies seem tamed a bit too much. But wow. Nice work!

    Tom,

Very cool track.   Really like it...     Some good critiques already.    I would like to hear more kick and snare, the bass interplay with kick and snare would be maybe more representative of this genre.   That said, still great work.

Although this style of music is not my thing -- a tad generic for my tastes -- I was taken by the production, arrangement & recording.  A bang up job and a very good listen.   !!

    you had me at "7/4"

    LOL

the mix has quite a few issues,
bass guitar louder than everything else (love the tone tho),
no kick, rest of the drums are too light as well,
    synth pads too loud,

but i'm digging the chord structures, and the choice of key sounds...

for this kind of arrangement, it seems like there should be improvised solos across the top of it...
if the key sounds were a bit edgier, it would almost remind me of some of the older bill bruford arrangements, say off of 'feels good to me'

Thanks to all for the comments! This tune came from around the year 2000 and was mixed by a much younger version of yours truly.

Hey, Yoropal, I know I'm talking to a true musician when the audience perspective of drums is mentioned! It looks like the snare ended up in a weird place, and I'm putting out an A.P.B. for the kick drum. Prepare the milk cartons.

JamesG1213, yes I very much appreciate the L42 reference!  Even more, that someone besides myself has even heard of them. Many thanks for the guilty pleasure compliment!

I agree with Daryl1968, the cymbals get a bit fizzy, good call. I can wratchet that down some.

Kenny, I was out of my comfort zone on this one, shooting for a respectable prog jazz performances, kind of flashy, glad to know I got close! Thanks for the comments . . .

Dan, your ears and skills are obvious to anyone who is paying attention around here. Even better that you contribute and help the work of others on such a regular basis - thanks very much for the time and help.

Hey Kevinwal, thanks for the kudos - I agree it's getting a little more difficult to judge the hf as one gets older. Thanks goodness for frequency graphs for the eyeballs. Good call on the kick drum, thanks for the comments.

Markno999, thanks for the thoughts, much obliged. As I wrote and recorded this 16 years ago, I probably didn't even know what the genre required! Still, ignorance of the genre is no excuse. I'll definitely consider a make-over, thanks again.

ABull, and Batsbrew,  glad you appreciated the effort. I do like the different types of sounds and when they come in, arrangement - wise, but agreed the mix could be a lot better and the drums in particular. I'll try another run at it, thanks for the suggestions.

    you guys rock.

Hi. Cool and interesting song. A bit weird for me to have the snare in my left ear (listening on HP). Would also like some more BD.

Mix crits aside since already mentioned, I liked the tune!   Odd time sigs are frequently part of what I do so I can certainly appreciate the way you've arranged this one.    The bass was a standout for me, as were the many layers of keys weaving in and out.
