Groove Monkee MIDI Files in VST Drum Modules
Greetings Fellow Sonarians! (N00b question incoming) I have some Groove Monkee MIDI drum files that work fine in SD3 in X3. But they don't seem to work when I try to play them via SonicCouture's Konkrete, NI Drum Lab, or NI Polyplex (Reaktor ensemble). The notes are clearly visible in Piano Roll view (though oddly, immovable). Clicking on those keys or notes in that view also produces no sound. But playing via a MIDI keyboard works. I'm sure it's a simple Sonar 101 (or lower) solution. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Ed

Sounds to me like you don't have a soft synth enabled to read the midi. Numerous how tos spattered throughout the sight. You work in SD3, right? Copy your settings for a track(s) that worked for you before, perhaps?

Drum maps were also my first thought. I have a several Groove Monkey sets, including Blues Drums and Breakbeats. Each of them included an Extras folder with a bunch of different drum maps for different DAWS.

+1 to the drum maps. Many programs use default general MIDI mapping, but some default to internal mapping so MIDI notes trigger "non standard" pieces (by note number).

Thanks so much for replying, folks. The Extras folders inside my GrooveMonkee contain no MIDI files. (Inside the Extras/Cakewalk folder, there are a BFD and EZDrummer folder. I don't own either of these and don't know what to do with the non-MIDI files contained therein.) As for Drum Maps, it's a bit confusing for me choosing a drum map as the output source in the "O" pulldown, as this bypasses my selected soft synth of choice (in this case Kontakt 5 with either NI DrumLab or Konkrete inside). Not only that, from Akai to Yamaha, there must be at least 100 drum maps listed. Having no idea which one to choose, I chose a couple to no avail. I've attached a screen grab hoping this might help. It's now obvious that I have no idea what I'm doing, despite owning and using Sonar since Cakewalk Pro Audio 8!

You are using drum synths (Konkrete, NI Drum Lab, or NI Polyplex) which i have never worked with.So I can´t give you the info, which drum map fits. At least the Groove Monkey Support should know. If nobody knows (have you asked in the NI and GM aso forums which drum map to use for the GM midi files , tried Google ?) I think you have to awkwardly try it out or create your own. regards

Thanks, Pragi. I'm still not clear on drum maps. If I understand correctly (and likely don't), drum maps are simply "kits" that play via general MIDI drum sounds? I think I may have narrowed down the source of the problem: Maybe it's the way Kontakt handles MIDI files? Just for kicks (pardon the pun), I moved one of the Groove Monkee MIDI clips to another track with a (non-drum), non-Kontakt-powered synth (NI Massive and G-Force impOSCar 2, in this case) and it DOES work there, albeit a jumbled montage of notes. While I can play individual notes or chords fine in all Kontakt-based synths, these MIDI files won't play back in any that I try (and I have many-too many for a n00b like me)...

Thanks again for your help, folks. After posts at NI and emails to Groove Monkee (who were lightning quick with a response, btw), the culprit was selecting MIDI channel 10 inside DrumLab and Konkrete. Still need to figure out how they work with Polyplex, which is a Reaktor ensemble.
