kevmsmith81 I recorded a cover of "Okie from Muskogee". Here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfGY4l-EQYM
Great job, Kev! Good instrumentation. Good vocals (where'd the English accent go?). Good mix. Not mastered too loud! All good!

Thanks all, appreciate the feedback. I figured a Merle Haggard song (or any country song for that matter) would sound a bit weird in my natural accent!

Thanks! I tried to emulate how the original did the stereo mix by having two contrasting guitar tracks quite far each side of the mix, and unusually for me I didn't have the drums and bass dead centre (one was a little left, one a little right). I then used a stereo widening plugin (RescueMK I think) to give it a little more width and thought it worked nicely for this song. That said, I don't use too many third party plugins as aside from not wanting a plugin menu that's bloated, the plugins supplied with the version of Sonar I've had is so good I don't tend to see the need to go out hunting for more that often. I've recently been doing more in terms of mastering the tracks after I've mixed them (something I'd never really thought about previously), although I don't try to pretend I can replace a dedicated mastering engineer. It's fine for me doing this as a hobby though, and it's nice to be learning all the time whilst doing this.

Wish I had a dollar for every time I've played that song in the NC honky tonks..... of course we changed up some of the words a bit....and added a cha cha cha ending. Well done.

Sounds pretty good here, but more important it comes across as a good tribute! Just retro enough to suit, but with a modern production edge.

Very smooth vocals and a nice tribute to the Hag -- a man who is generally underappreciated (imo) for his wonderful songwriting. He often had a poetical lyrical sense (not in Okie, tho) and used chord changes which were somewhat unusual in country. And, what a voice. I saw him perform in an intimate club here in nyc years back - his band was superb and so was he. !! Allan ===

Hi Kevin, Waow pure country feel, I've heard this songwriter was gone some days ago. I didn't know about him but he surely was a real personnality in the Nashville style music world. Anyway ,you mastered the cover with craft. All the best. Olivier.
