What does Windows Media Player "WOW" do?

I just stumbled on that option in Media Player.  It seems to do some dynamic mastering.  I makes quite a difference on the recordings I played, but I can't really hear what it is doing.  I would like to know how that effect is accomplished because I might want to do something similar on my recordings.

I couldn't find much information other than a couple of posts that say it it creating a 5.1 field on stereo speakers.

Any ideas here?

Is it similar to what this product does?

And here's another thread that purports to know what the processing is, but I'm not sure I understand that one.
