AZ Controller 0.5 Sneak preview (OSC support for Sonar)

I have just completed my OSC test setup. And I am happy to see it is really working... So I have decided to share "print screens" from my phone (3 screens from different tabs, combined into one picture):

After quick looking at the picture, you can conclude that you have already seen many such "setups". Sure, the pictures are from TouchOSC for Android (http://hexler.net/docs/touchosc ) . But let me point you on some details you have not seen, at least not when that (or any other such) program is used with Sonar:
  1. On the top of the first screen you can see marker names, they are updated "real time" and they are touch sensitive
  2. "Sync" is to recall all information from Sonar, for example in case you have switched the phone off for a while
  3. Pan is touch sensitive (can be used to overwrite automation), the volume fader is also touch sensitive (but that you could see before)
  4. Time display change the color when in Play and Recording mode
  5. You can see compete strip names (not cut by 6-8 characters!), the are also active, the middle one can be touched to switch between track and buses and it change the color to indicate the fact
  6. Mute/Solo/Rec/Automation Read/Write, all together without switching "modes"
  7. On the second screen you can see 16 channels, with mute and solo status. You can solo/mute consequent channels by swiping
  8. On the third screen you can see ACT Dynamic mapping, with ProChannel/FX Bin support (pressing "FX" button round switching between all existing FX and ProChannel plug-ins for focused strip) as well as corresponding Synth. After tests with "encoders" and "knobs", I came to the conclusion it is better have on good working fader (touch sensitive, for overwriting automations) then many half functional touch knobs. The parameter can be selected pressing left (ACT Faders) or right (ACT Knobs) buttons. Buttons on the lower part are ACT buttons directly (and they function as such, of course with feedback)
That setup is for controlling Sonar remotely, when you can not see the screen. For other use cases not only layout but also functionality can be different. Unlike other solutions, it is not limited by Mackie Control. OSC freedom is great

No other software on PC side is required (no OSC<->MIDI bridges), the solution can be used with any OSC capable Apps. Also with several in parallel, also in combination with conventional MIDI and joystick devices.

And the very last note: all labels you see on the picture except standard button names are coming from Sonar, not from TouchOSC editor and not from photoshoping...

I have not prepared installation video yet and some checks are still pending. But I think it is ready for the public test (while I am almost sure no one will try it, that is usual experience with my plug-ins for Sonar...):

Note that TouchOSC App is required (not free). I tested with my HTC Evo 3D only, which has unusual resolution. I do not know how good TouchOSC is going to scale the layout for other phones (probably 10-15 minutes to fix for me or anyone in case the phone resolution is known).

In any case, I am happy with it. Time to connect it with my HUI preset for d8b, to create nice layout for one "real" user.

Looks brilliant! TouchOSC is about 5 shekels, whereas Lemur is 25. I might well try this out since my Alphatrack (which I tested extensively with your plugin, and it performed very well for a while, thanks for that) seems to have given up the ghost...

I doubt it can replace "real" fader, you better look at Faderport (also works fine with my plug-in and so configurable)

Lemur looks nice, that is (the only?) advantage over TouchOSC in respect to Sonar controlling with my plug-in.

For tables there must be other preset combi, current ready to use combination is phone oriented. On tablet I can configure more strips in parallel (unlike Mackie oriented solutions there is no limitation, can be let say 64 for users with thin fingers )

    I will definitely try this!
Just checked and TouchOSC is fortunately available for my old Kindle Fire.
I tried TouchDAW before and although it works quite well with SONAR,
you can't beat a specialized app!

    BTW:
I use your other AZ Controller plug-in with my little digital mixer, an Edirol M-16DX (no faders but lots of knobs ),
    and it is absolutely brilliant!!
I had always the problem that Pan and Gain settings never snapped to "0% C" or "0.0" when the corresponding knob was moved to center position.
Now with your plug-in eventually everything works as expected (and more)!

My deepest respect for your much appreciated work and a big Thank You!

    Best,
    Klaus

I use TouchOSC and this is an awesome update to AZ controller ! I will download it but have too much on my plate to test it right now. I am excited about it though ! I use TouchOSC to send CCs and Windows keys to Sonar, but there no update back from Sonar. If I can create a toggle in TouchOSC that is updated by Sonar to show its state I will be very happy indeed!

I went and bought the TouchOSC App for my android to test this out. However, it's not working for me. I went and downloaded the AZ Controller test version (azctrl_0_5r0b310) from your forum and downloaded the 2 files you linked to (the spp file and the OSC_Phone_1_0 file, , followed your steps from http://www.azslow.com/index.php/topic,295.0.html, but it's not working.

There's something I'd like to point out: In your instructions you write to "Put the Host you see into TouchOSC configuration." Well, on the AZCtrl Options Tab, when I press "Configure" in the "OSC" section, the AZCtrl shows near the bottom:

    Host (guessing)
    169.254.113.9
    169.254.174.220
    192.168.19.2

I tried all those addresses in the TouchOSC configuration screen, but they didn't work. I still get "0, Active clients" after I push done on the TouchOSC screen. Also, there was a local IP address at the bottom of the TouchOSC configuration screen that was different from those listed under Host (guessing). I even tried entering that address in the host section of the TouchOSC configuration screen, and that didn't get the TouchOSC working to control SONAR transport, either.

An installation video may be helpful.

If you have any thoughts about anything in my post, let me know?

I'm willing to test further, if you want me to. I'm waiting to receive a X-Touch and a new audio interface in a few days, so I will be doing a lot of MIDI exploring, and spending a lot of time in the SONAR forums now, and for a while to come.

    Cya around.

    169.254.174.220
    192.168.19.2

Thank you for giving it a try and reporting about the result. Negative result is also a result. I am working is science, many people do not know that there are more publications which "close" something (prove something is not observed) then "open" something (prove something is really exists). But programs are simpler then nature, it is almost always possible to get positive result

The list of IP addresses means you have Bonjour (169.254.x.x) and some router (192.168.x.x) in your local network. Probably you have more then one adapter configured (2 129.254. addresses). Also your router give no names to devices (so you see 192.168. and not the name). Also AZCtrl probably shows only the first 3, there can be more! To see the whole list:
    * open "command line" in Windows (Win+R key combination, type "cmd" then enter, otherwise find "cmd" or "cmd32" in your programs menu)
    * type "ipconfig /all"
    * find all lines mentioning "IPv4-Address", or simply all lines with numbers in format X.X.X.X
If some of these addresses you have not tried yet, try them.

To make OSC work, TouchOSC should be able send packets to your PC. If you have configured ports correctly, after the first packet reach AZCtrl, you will see "1 client". And that does not happened.
    1) your phone should be able to communicate with your PC. That should be over wlan (not mobile internet). You can see real IP in Settings (exact place is Android incarnation dependent), TouchOSC not always show it correctly. That IP should be similar to something in the PC list.
    2) check that TouchOSC can communicated with your PC in general. You can use TouchOSC Editor for Windows, following all instructions and Google to make it work.
    3) check your Windows Firewall settings. During OSC activation you had to get a question from the system to allow Sonar be a network server. May be you had that question before (with some other plug-in). In case you have forbidden Sonar to be a server, AZCtrl can not receive anything. It can be that your current network is configured as "Public" while the firewall allows to serve only in "Private" (default setting).

Finally we can organize short TeamViewer online session. The number of possible Network related problems is too long and too technical for any music related forum...

An installation video may be helpful.

There is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Gl61MvEuQ , but is shows the case when everything goes smooth.

I'm willing to test further, if you want me to.

Sure! And you can get free technical support for free program. How often that happens?

I'm waiting to receive a X-Touch and a new audio interface in a few days, so I will be doing a lot of MIDI exploring, and spending a lot of time in the SONAR forums now, and for a while to come.

I can also answer on any questions about X-Touch with Sonar. You probably will use CW MackieControl with it, not AZ Controller. But I know MackieControl source code (and a bit more...) and I have "moded" version of it (if you want control ProChannel EQ/Comp).

like to see this kinda work from users of sonar ;)

Such programs require some skills in programming and time. And extra skills to make it 500kB without dependencies.
Not many pro musicians and sound engineers release there work for free. The same with programmers. Everyone has to eat... I was born and grown with Communistic ideas, but we all know that it does not work in general practice

This may be the problem. I only have my phone's hotspot capability for Internet connection right now. Later today, I'm getting Time Warner cable installed, so I will try again after I get TWC installed.

    Thanks for the detailed reply.

And, yes, I'm sure I'll want to try out your moded version of the MackieControl source code to "control ProChannel EQ/Comp)" when my X-Touch arrives. I see you also have M Audio Keystation Pro 88. I have one, too.
