What's all this rot about Stutter Edit having to be used as a synth?
Before I bought Stutter Edit in a recent flash sale (great value at $49) I was warned by someone that it's a little awkward to use because you have to set it up as an instrument and sidechain tracks to it from a bus, and indeed the guy who does the Stutter Edit Groove3 video says you have to set it up exactly like that. Seemed like a bit of a workflow hassle, but I figured I'd cope with it anyway. So upon playing with the thing just now, at first I found it in my VST effects menu, so I reconfigured it as a synth in the VST properties, but found I couldn't set it up like the Groove3 video at all. If I insert it as an instrument then there is no way to sidechain anything to it. So I reconfigured it back to an effect, inserted it on a track, enabled MIDI input, inserted a MIDI track, output it to Stutter Edit, and away I went stuttering and glitching to my heart's content. So apparently it works great as an insert effect in Sonar. So what's the deal with these other people? Are they talking about an older version of Stutter Edit, or are they being hampered by some kind of limitation in their DAW or something?

There has only been one version of Stutter Edit with a couple of updates. The routing depends on the DAW. In the case of SONAR, prior to X3, any plug-in needing MIDI I/O had to be configured as a synth. Whether using the old "Configure as Synth" method or the VST drop down MIDI I/O options, routing for Stutter Edit is the same, plug-in in the FX bin/rack of the audio track/bus and a MIDI track with output set to the plug-in.

IIRC the need to configure it as a synth went away after X3. It's possible some online advice is out of date.

That's exactly right. I had it when it first came out and you did indeed have to configure it as a synth. But not since X3...thank goodness. I almost never use it but when I need it...it's the bees knees.

Wow I can't even remember having to do that pre-X3. Guess I must have blocked it out.

It is insanely fun. And I'm finding you don't even need to go crazy with it. It's great for adding little variations and fills to drum loops when you only have the one straight loop.

But it is when you start to gently mess with it on vocals it gets REALLY fun! And on pop-sounding strings! Bye bye weekends and sleep, this plugin have preventet me from going to bed more than any other plug has ;)
