getting a clip to follow the project tempo

I'm working on a cover.  I've imported the original song for reference while I build up my version.  The original wav and my project tempo vary a little.  So I trim the clip and align the first beat to a project measure, then bounce to clip.  Then I enable the clip for audio transients and raise the AudioSnap dialog.  Next I edit the Clip Map.  I get things aligned so the downbeats match up with the clips audio.  (Which still drifts from the project tempo as played by the metronome.)

Now I set the Clip Follows Project resolution to Beats.  I check the Folow Proj Tempo checkbox in the Inspector Clips pane.

Problem is the clip is not stretched to match the project tempo.  By the end of the song the metronome and the song downbeats are off, even though if I go back to the Clip Map the beats/measures look good.

What am I missing???

Thanks!

Since you indicate the tempo change isn't that much, depending on your specifics I'd recommen:

    1. Using DSP based stretching (slip-edit while holding control)
    2. Converting the audio into a groove clip

I run into what you describe often, and wrote an article for Sound on Sound magazine about SONAR techniques when doing covers.
