Looping beats track without limiting other recording track

Hi guys,

just started using sonar - my first recording studio software thing. I'm struggling with [what I think is] a pretty simple use case. I recorder one track of beats on a darbuka as the rhythm track. Now I want to record a guitar track, but have the darbuka looping until I finish the guitar part. I got the darbuka track to loop, but now Sonar thinks this is the length of the guitar part too! So I'm getting what it calls takes. Like here:

I don't want "takes" I want the whole recording. How can I make one track loop, while the other recorded as a whole?

Thanks

Create a real loop out of your darbuka clip. You can slice it to an exact length of, say, 4 or 8 bars, then hit CTRL+L on your keyboard and it becomes a groove clip. Now you can grab the edge and extend it for however far you want. Alternative, you can just grab the original and hold CTRL as you drag it to create a copy. Do that however many times you want.

Hi, and welcome to this forum. As Sander says, the easiest way is to create a loop (right click, and choose bounce to clip(s)) of your darbuka recording, (Ctrl+left click and) drag it out to desired length (if the clip is not right already). Ctrl+L gives you the opportunity to drag it repeatedly for as long as you wish (you will see a "groove" in the clip when it starts on the next repetition. (I do however start my songs at measure two, to have time to get ready for recording)
All the best.

Also, if you are just noodling with no definite "time-frame" in mind, you can drag the "looping" part into the Matrix View, be sure it is set to "Follow Transport" and click "play" on that cell... it will blink till you hit play/record on the transport and then start, and loop until you stop it. While doing so, you can arm another track (no loop area selected), and record it to your heart's content.

Caveat for this - you will want a marker (or start at a given time manually) using the above, as the loop start time is dependent on where the Now Time cursor is located when you hit play/record.

Good for noodling with no defined endpoint though.

Hi guys,

thanks a lot for the helpful and prompt replies. I ended up using matrix view, it was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
