How we got into being able to make music for movies

Hello Musicians and Music people,

I am Joe Barnett with Crystal Magic Orchestra
crystalmagicorchestra . com

I an constantly amazed by musicians and music people every day.

I know the creative process and appreciate those who put the effort into making it happen.

I'm going to share how I got into being able to make music for movies.

There may be musicians on this list with that interest and this will be one way that it was done.

My wife and I are musicians and composers and we put together much music as an example for movie people to hear.

We moved to LA California for this purpose. I searched out all of the different type of people who get music onto movies there and we went around to their offices and left copies of our music there.

We got good responses and many of them stated that if we send them music to them like the music pieces they heard, they will definitely find movies to put them on.

Once you start getting your music onto movies, then you can go around and talk to people who are making movies to have them have you as the music composer for that movie.

One of the things they really liked about our music was the music solo phrases that I created in the music. They said that that was what would make so many movie people interested in our music.

I play electric guitar and keyboards, but I was a professional trumpet player for many years in R&B bands. What is great about a wind instrument is that you can really feel and express the music melody phrases really well. I was seriously good at doing improvised solos on the trumpet and I directly applied that melodic phrase interpretation into my guitar playing and keyboard playing.

As we were going around with our music we ran into John Williams, the composer for all of the Star Wars music.

He asked, "Is that your music that you are listening to?" I said, "Yes."

"Let me hear it," he said and I then handed him the music player and headphones.

He listened and then he said, "Come to my office tomorrow morning." He then gave me the address and the time for the meeting.

When my wife and I got there, there were also two of the Synthesizer players there that recorded the Star Wars synth work on all of the Stars Wars music.

They then stated that they didn't want us to change our music, but they wanted to give us professional recording advice on how to bring movie music up to their level of work.

This is how Joe Barnett and Dr. Angela Barnett in Crystal Magic Orchestra got into being able to make music for movies.

An Eternal Life album for $350? But no satisfaction guarantee?

Is this one of those Rudyard Kipling "Just So" stories? Don't think I read that one. Thanks for sharing.

I bet it was made a lot easier by having those Elohim Angels flying you around, beating the traffic jams.

Re: How we got into being able to make music for movies 2016/05/08 08:58:12 (permalink)
What got us started was having a few on our demo songs used in the movie "Radioactive Dreams". The director Albert Pun really liked our stuff. Then he gave us the chance to right some score for it. That scene was where a garage door opened and the two guys inside were able to breakout into the post atomic war future. I sampled a circular saw on my Casio keyboard and played it back in different pitches. Seemed to work well!

Bottom line for me was to know somebody and be willing to work for almost nothing until they get to know you. For my partner Tony and I, we did a lot of B grade films back in the '80's. You need to have a very good portfolio and have to pound on doors. Nobody will know who you are unless you make all the first, second, and third moves.
Good luck with this. I loved the work.

That's usually the case around the movie industry. I hear the music industry is trying hard to copy the same model, by consistently re-producing the same thing!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I've had a few songs in movies and tv shows.  It was all based on who I knew.  Now, 15 years later, I know nobody.  But really, i'm not trying to earn a living musically anymore, so I don't care.  I can do what I want, whenever I want, and if I want my music in movies i'll play my guitar as I sit on my sofa watching TV.  :p
