Exclusive use of audio output device

Is there a way to configure Cakewalk to not grab exclusive use of the audio output device, or to temporarily release it?

When I have Cakewalk running, I can't use any other program that outputs audio. From those programs, I either get an error message along the lines of "Unable to open audio device", or there is no sound at all. When I close Cakewalk, everything goes back to normal.

Using the Windows Control Panel, I've tried unchecking "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" in the "Sound -> Playback -> Properties -> Advanced" tab, but then I have the opposite problem: Cakewalk tells me there is no audio device configured on start-up.

The main reason for my wanting to do this is to listen to exported WAV files to see what they sound like on various external music players. Of course I can quit Cakewalk first to do that, but it would be nice if I didn't have to.

I know this is a nit, just inconvenient.

Thanks!

Hi. Do you have "Share drivers with other programs" checked in Preferences (P), Audio, Playback and Recording? If not, try to check it. Hope it helps.
All the best.

Nope, and that fixed me right up once I checked it.

Thank you, Ken!
