Film Composer Uses Sonar to Score "Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)"
This is a studio interview (2/02/16) with film composer Joe Kraemer, by Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL). Joe discusses his workflow and how he incorporates Cakewalk Sonar into his creative workflow, with VSL, of course. He also mentions that he is the only composer he knows that uses Sonar on a PC :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuRwcfVO9fs

Really interesting! And he's still on Sonar 8! It's NOT the tool, it's the master craftsman using the tool for sure! Thanks for sharing!

Suppose he's been too busy to update his workflow to a new version. Joe mentions using a template that he set up a while back, that gives him the ability to get up and running quickly with tools he's already familiar with. Probably some good advice in there somewhere! It is all about the artist for sure! Here's the full score, final render with a live orchestra ... big studio budget, they can afford it :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCs3tjSZLCo

Things is...Sonar 8 is probably better if you are only going to use midi..If you never use console view or any of the mixing features. I worked like that many years and was very happy. Then I found console view. The only thing now is if you use an electronic sound you can do a lot of cool things using the mixing features. The market I work in now requires me to mix my own music, sooooo I really can't afford to go back to Sonar 8.

Well the real takeaway here is that the composer used Sonar as a composition tool vs. Pro Tools, or Logic or, whatever .... He could have used X3 or Platinum as well, instead of Sonar 8.5 ... to the same result ... It seems to be a matter of what you are hired to do. Write the music, perform, record, mix, master, etc. Especially with big studio projects & big budgets, the roles are spread out to different teams, different tools ... but still, it's very cool to see Sonar on the team :-)

well, how many times have we read here and elsewhere one fellow posting how he/she "updated" something only to have complete disaster ensue ? the lesson here is: if it works, don't break it.
