Pop-progrock song

Playing in a rock covers band and as well as the usual U2, G'n'R and Bryan Adams we do a few more interesting covers like Muse, Lonely Robot and Kino. So I wrote a track for us in the vein of John Mitchell's stuff, poppy prog-rock. I also used it as a test for AD2, I always use Steven Slate drums in my stuff, which is mixed inside Sonar. Using AD2 and mixing inside AD was a bit weird, and not overly enamored with the results. Guitars are GR4/Ampeg SVT. My voice is there so our vocalist could learn the melody so I apologise for that. A quick track written in a day, quite pleased with the verse and chorus tunes. The bridge is a bit hackneyed though sorry.

Personally, I prefer to print the individual drum tracks out of AD2 without FX and mix them in Sonar. I think the results are better.

I have to agree with Dan, it is quite easy to set AD2 up to feed out to separate outs.
This is quite different for you Mark, not really getting the kick from this mix which I think might well help drive it. The guitar playing is up to your usual, if not slightly slower, quality.
A tweak here and there in the mix should bring it all together, thanks for sharing.

I liked the vocal harmonies, and the chords in the chorus, along with the guitar lines accenting it all - nice job.

i really should RTFM. i asssumed it would be similar to Kontakt so set up each output in the AD2 window to a different output which I thought woujld be reflected in the 16 outs in Sonar. Nope. Hence the mix-in-the-VSTi result. The kit is the prog one from AD2 but for me doesn't sound like a modern rock kit should do; too much thud on the kick, too much room on the whole. I might swap it out for my trusty Steven Slate kits. Anyhow, I do have a sensitive side John honest! the plan is to do a whole album in this style with my mate who plays bass in our little band. we've got an intro and a few song snippets but this is the first finished song. Glad you enjoyed

Ah Moon Safari are a great band. Was listening to Himlabacken in the car today. What they do with the harmony vocals is awesome, and of course they can write a damn good tune too. Prog rock remains alive, there's been some damn fine albums over the last few years, Haken's latest from last month is brilliant and Frost* new release is tomorrow! Add in to Lonely Robot, Big Big Train, Arena, Flying Colors, Neal Morse, Steven Wilson's various acts, Bigelf, Beardfish, Spock's Beard not to mention all the metal bands I like who are a bit proggy...yay!

I like it... Nice mix of influences. Being a prog fan it's hard not to like anything in that realm.  The performances are really good all around. The overall mix sounds a little crunchy (master compression?) but hard to tell for sure. Regarding AD2, it's what I use 90%+ of the time. I never make a point of mentioning it, but a lot of my mixes use a simple stereo instance and most projects that don't only have the kick and snare separated out (three tracks total). Also, try dropping some of the delivered AD2 MIDI clips into a project and just rearrange the notes without changing their velocities - I find it helps to not keep all velocities in the 110+ range for a more natural sound, and then compress/EQ to get the overall levels up.

This sounds Awesome Man!!! What impresses me the most about your songwriting and playing is how many chord changes you make and keep things so interesting. Not just the single note melodies.
This is great, and as for your voice, I know how ya feel man, I am the same way kinda, except I am my only voice for now, but I gotta try just to finish my song.
This tune, I hear choruses of people in the Chorus, so you accomplished what you were trying to express and that's what I try to do myself sometimes adding my own vocals.

Hey Rik Well I can't do extreme metal all the time, right? i really don't have the patience to record very complex prog (though I love to listen to it qv Frost, Neal Morse, Dt etc) so this lighter style is better. it was hard to not stick a longer solo in though...

Hi Steve - Thanks for the comments. As i said above, this wasn't intended to be released to the wider world just my band mates but I thought the tune was good and deserved a wider audience. I'm sure AD2 is great, i'm just so used to using SSD that I didn't adapt my workflow enough. i use the Step Sequencer to programme the midi for the drums, on my 'real' tracks I will alter velocity on fast/consequetive notes as round robin isn't always effective.

I truly enjoyed this song, but I was surprised by which association I made after I'd listened for a minute or so: I thought, "This song, the sound, the uplifting, soaring feeling, the rising chord changes - this seems like it could be a new, metallish-prog version of a great late 60's Brit-pop song!"
This version sounds really live in character, and it would also be very interesting to hear a more controlled, tight, "studio-type" (thinking Pink Floyd) production.
There must be a hundred interesting elements to enjoy just in this one piece! I kept thinking, "Oh, this is nice. Wow, that's cool."
Thanks for the really interesting and uplifting listen.

thanks LJ for waxing lyrical. I agree that the AD2 drums do have too much room on them which contributes to the live-ish feel. it's nice to have that juxtaposition of different things eg heavy guitars and harmony vocals - you of course do that so well in your tunes

AD2 is pretty good, and I usual mix in AD but always have kick and snare sends to their own tracks.
