Original Song by Craig Wilkins recorded and mixed with Sonar Platinum
Hi Group, I purchased Sonar Platinum a little over a year ago along with picking up the guitar after a 20yr break from it. My Girl and I have been recording at the house when we have the time. Please have a listen to this original song I wrote and performed. My buddy Bob played an electronic drum set and Robin sang the back ups. I sang the lead and played the rest of the Instruments. I would love to add some keyboards to this song. If any of you that play keyboards are interested in collaborating on some originals I would love to send you the tracks over. Hey..... we all use Sonar here so I wouldn't be very difficult import and export the files back and forth. Your feedback on the song and the mix would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Craig https://soundcloud.com/buddy-goodboy/take-you-away

Craig, Awesome song and the vocals are outstanding. Really well done all around. I might recommend adding a flanger or exciter to the chorus vocals (BGV's) to make them pop out a little bit more. Mix is well done.... There are a few keyboard players here so hopefully you will get some collaborators. Regards

Thanks Kenny, I listened to your guitar playing. You can really think on your feet and your melodic compositions are true and not robotic... That's a rare find in a guitar player. Craig

Thanks Mark, I never realized that mixing was such a challenge until I started trying to do it myself. I have a new respect for the talented mix engineers out there. I've got so much to learn about subtleties. I loved your version of "NO Matter What" and "Wichita Lineman". Did you arrange and record the strings? Really good stuff. Your mixes have good clarity. Craig, Thanks, appreciate the listen. The strings in Wichita Lineman are MIDI data triggering NI Session Strings and are an approximation of the original recording. I did not arrange them per say, but copied the original arrangement into my project as closely as I heard them. Most of my covers I try to copy the original artist as closely as possible, including tempo maps. I started doing covers really to learn recording techniques, mixing, arranging and overall production. Haven't quite moved on to recording any original music yet and enjoy doing the covers --Still learning. Regards

Nice sounding song, vocals are good, the guitar sounds well, the bass could do with being a little more obvious as could the kick which I think is what Kenny meant by the mix being 90% there.
Thanks for sharing.

Very powerful song, performances and especially the vocals. Just need some slight TLC on the EQ. The mix is a bit low-mid heavy. Obviously you're mainly a guitar player and I would suggest 1. 300HZ (or so) HPF on the guitars. Guitarists love that low end live but it's wasted in recordings, JMO. 2. Put some compression on the bass, HPF @80HZ and then rais it by about 20db. 3. HPF on the vocals, they are excellent and need to be a bit shinier IMO. 4. Toms are just tad boomy, personal for me taste there. As myolpal says, welcome to the forum.

Thanks The most difficult thing for me is getting clarity and separation in my mixes. I'm gonna try and clean up the bottom end and get some slap in the kick. Bass Guitar needs to be heard for sure. Craig

Thanks Ed, I've been experimenting with your suggestions. I'll post a clean up mix latter this week. I've been struggling with mid low mud and mix clarity since the beginning. I'm currently using the Yamaha HS5's with a foam pad and it's very difficult for me to hear the bass and mid lows. I often get what I think is a very good sound on these monitors and the mix sounds bad on most other speakers. I think I'll have to get a couple of different monitors so that I can check the "translation" across other speakers. This crap can get expensive. Thanks for the suggestions! I like your version of Fire... Craig

Wow! This sounds super fantastic! As said above, this mix is very close to done. I'd dirty up that bass a little bit to get it to stand out more. Be careful HPF'ing everything as the overall sound could get too thin. When you can hear the HPF, you've gone too far. Personally, I like the toms the way they are, but the bass does need compression and something else to make it more audible and more defined. You think monitors are expensive...just wait until plugin fever strikes, lol. Room treatment is just as important as the monitors and that may be part of the problem you are having with the bass. It's a very common problem. Treat the room, maybe add a sub, then see how your mixes change. Great job on this and welcome to the forums! Regards, Dan

Great work Craig. Sounds really nice, and like the rest said, - a killer vocal. Might be the (poor) headset I'm listening on now, but to me the base could be a bit more defined. Other than that, great job on the mix. rgd Anders

Terrific song, great guitars. I would agree with some of the comments regarding the mix ;roll off some lows (300hz might be too much, but bapu is better at this than I am). EQ the vocals to make them a little brighter, but the vox themselves are fine. I like it

Thanks, I'm gonna experiemnt this weekend and try and clean up the mud in the mix. I'm thinking about picking some more studio monitors... (JBL 5" powered ones) I have the Yamah HS5 and I actually can't stand them. Hey.... im sure it's me but I have a helluva time getting a good read on the base and mid lows with those speakers. I really appreciate that you like my voice..... I cringe everytime I hear my self sing. I have downloaded some vocal lessons and trying to find the time to do them. Now my Girl Robin.... she can really sing... she's done professional jingles, church stuff and backups for hire in the past. Remember ...... Sonar has the thing called Melodyne and when you don't overuse it it can be your best friend after 30 takes!! My vocal stamina is non existent....thank God for home recording as a hobby.

you know.... I've tried to shake this 80's thing but it's a part of my DNA. I played guitar for about 15yrs back in the late 70's and throughout the 80's and then Nirvana happened. I had to get on with real life so I put it down for about 25yrs and about a year and a half ago a buddy that I played in band with in the 80s called and wanted to do a "reunion" We all got together for a couple of rehearsals but the logistics of living in different parts of the US are working against us so we've lost the enthusiasm for the reunion.. plus the lead vocalist has completely lost his voice so I said to hell with it, picked up Sonar, started trying to absorb everything I could about it and recording and had to sing the stuff myself. I never realized just how fun it could be to record something at home and have it sound pretty good. It's great fun! I do have a song that has a little bit of a New Country twing to it. I'll upload that one next after I finish some vocal arrangements. Craig

Sorry Craig, I apologize, your song sounds great, as for the Mix, I'm still learning that stuff myself. I was making a joke that I should'nt have with my reply, I apologize, lately there's been a joke on the internet going around about how so many country bands are playing rock/80's music where people are replying how the band Florida-Georgia Line with the comments are not country music but they call themselves country music. I don't listen to the radio but I have heard a few of their tunes and how they can call conformity Country, I dunno....... I know how you feel man, I quite playing for 20 years or so ago and then tried to get back into playing, but my instrument was so old it just give me anguish trying to play it. Then recently around Christmas I got a new "Beginner Guitar" nothing special but it will work for now and also recently purchased Sonar Pro, I am having a ton of fun with it. So I am working on things and music is FUN again for me also. I know how you feel, back in the 80's it was all EGO's and nobody I was around was serious about anything except getting drunk and playing fast to impress the chicks. One reason I just quite altogether and went to work for a long time. You have a great arrangement with your songwriting, something unique in my opinion, your not trying to change who you are but expand on what you play. By that I mean a lot of people add RAP/COUNTRY/MIX-MASH Genre's when they run out of ideas but it doesn't sound like your doing that. Everybody gets compared to somebody, And I guess that's how we try and understand something new. Your music reminds me of so many Artist, and those are Artist from the past that I listen to still today on CD's and such. You have a great mix of a lot of artist from the 80's and I can't quite pick anyone particular to compare you to. I mean that as a compliment. This sounds really great!!! I apologize if any of my comments sounded bad. Keep on keepin' on!!!! Looking forward to hearing more!!!!! Enjoyed hearing this!!!!

Hey no problem, I wasn't offended at all.... I've come to the realization that I'm gonna stop trying to sound like Avenge Sevenfold..... Disturbed and Volbeat all rolled into one. I just don't have it in me but I do love the Heavy mixes of those artists and those who sound that way so If I can somehow incorporate that big raw energy into my stuff it might bring it to a place where it I'll love listening to it in my truck. Ultimately it's all about the song. That's the hardest part... to create a good song that makes people feel and that has timeless truth rolled up inside it. I read somewhere that most of the older Pro Producers and Sound engineers refer to today's sound as "Big Mono". That's such a perfect description..... but when you combine today's powerful sound with a good song it's something to behold. The 70s and 80's had a lot of trite stuff but mixed in with "Mikey you're so Fine"were songs like Jay Ferguson's "Thunder Island" That song is a masterpiece on so many levels but especially with the engineer's use of the stereo field and the placement of the bass guitar and piano in that mix. It sounds kinda weird but that song brings tears to my eyes when I hear it on good headphones and then there's Joe Walsh's guitar work.....holy perfection........ Revisit that song when you get a chance and you'll hear the genius in it! Believe me.... I don't want everything that I puke out to sound like the 80s but if it does then I can live with it. Me and my truck where I play "Craig's Greatest Hits" My girl has been very patient with me but I imagine that if she hears any of those songs one more time she's gonna smash my computer with a hammer and she's a singer! ;-) Craig
