Event Editor to show Drum Map

I don't use MIDI very much, but now I am trying to fine tune an Addictive Drum track that is set to GM map.
When I use the Sonar event editor it shows the piano notes, and I would like the Drum notes to show.
I read the documentation about instrument definitions and patches but it seems complicated and confusing.
Anyone know offhand how to fix this?

Thanks

If the midi data for the drums is GM, you can right click on the keyboard on the left side of piano roll and select "General Midi Drums" from the drop down list. This replaces the keys with drum instrument names. If you prefer using a drum map, you can select as output for your midi track "New Drum Map" and select "GM Drums". However, this is for piano roll, I don't think there is a way to show drum note names in event editor.

What you may do is split the midi track into midi tracks for each note using the CAL script "Split Note to Tracks". Then, you can open each note in its own event editor if that helps.

Thanks for the response, but I still have the problem.

I found what you are describing in the Piano Roll, but not in the Event editor.

The strange thing is that if I change the instrument to Session Drummer the Event Editor shows the notes as drums instead of keyboard.

The data column in the event list is picking up names from the plug-in. The vendor must add this feature to their plug-in for SONAR to read the data. Unfortunately, XLN does not do this. The only other drum synths I know with this feature are the BFD series from FXpansion.

I know this is a bit of an older thread - but I just thought I would mention that I typed up a simple Word document, with nice big fonts, that shows the GM note numbers, note names, and the associated drum kit piece names, so that it is easy to work with any of that.

In addition, as you work with it more, in a fairly short amount of time, you get to where you rarely need to even refer to the document.

Obviously it is not as easy as working with the names, like you get with Session Drummer, but it DOES do the job pretty well.  I have been doing it this way for many many years now.

And for custom kits I end up creating, that don't follow the general midi standard assignments, I create a document for each such kit, in addition to creating a track template for each drum kit I use (custom or GM), where each kit piece is assigned to its own audio output, levels are set to a starting point of -18 dBfs, and buses are inserted for grouping toms, cymbals, a bus for snare, a bus for kick, a bus for eventual use of parallel compression, and a drums master bus.

Anyways - I just thought I would pass on some encouragement, in that even having to work with note names instead of drum kit piece names, it really does become second nature, given some time - and a willingness to work with things the way they are for now.

Hopefully, someone will recognize some potential marketing advantage for their drum synth to provide the mapping back to the DAW software, as Session Drummer does, and then maybe we will start to see a reduced need for dealing with the raw note event data.

I wonder if there is some kind of way to build a plugin that could somehow DO the mapping, either for GM, or for custom mapping and have that somehow provide the needed data to Sonar, like Session Drummer does.  I don't know how such a plugin would be able to intercept the Sonar requests for plugin info, to be able to pass Sonar the mapping, but IF it could be done it sure would be nice.

Perhaps Cakewalk could even consider adding some sort of simple check box to the Event List where the user could indicate that they want the event data for that track to be mapped to GM drum names, or even perhaps let the user specify the use of a desired drum map to be used to map that track's event data to whatever mapping is within the specified drum map.

Anyone have any other ideas on what might make things like the above work within Sonar?  I would be happy to write up a feature request for whatever we all end up coming up with for ideas to accomplish mapping the midi events data to a drum map.

I think it would be a super nice touch for Sonar to have some kind of way to do this kind of mapping, as I don't think I have seen it in other software.  Enough helpful things like that might help someone choose to buy into Sonar, over some other recording software that did NOT have such functionality.

Or, do I just need more coffee?
