Homeward Bound (2016)
This is an original song by me. I wrote this when I was around nineteen, but put it on the shelf. I have just now gotten around to recording it. I am not a singer, but I couldn't find anybody willing to do it, so I did my best. Thanks for listening. Homeward Bound (2016) https://soundcloud.com/metaphasic/homeward-bound-2016 The mix, EQ and compression is probably not close to being right, but I am near tone-deaf. I hope I did alright.

Very reminiscent of Flock of Seagulls. Your vocal isn't perfect, but it works for this song. There are a few spots where your a little off pitch. You can try fixing that with Melodyne or re-record those spots. - Drums sit well in the mix, though you might want to consider varying some of the fills.
- Bass is just about the right level, but could use some EQ to raise the lower mids so it can be heard better. Just sweep an EQ on it until you hear some more texture, should be around 300hz.
- Guitars are good, and I like the way they fit the song.
Nice job! Regards, Dan

Wow, I like this one. To me it has a similar sound to the theme from an old Canadian TV show (which actually got a bit of US airplay) called Due South. I really like the jangely (sp?) sound of the guitar. I agree with Dan that you might want to bring the Bass up front a bit more. The vocals are just a bit off pitch sometimes but the melody, tone and intonation are good for this song. Nice one!

Tone-deaf? Seriously? No. I would disagree. You have some really cool stuff going on in this recording. The kind of creativity in this song does not come from someone who is tone-deaf. And.. Yes, you did alright IMO. True, you are not a singer, YET.. But there is no reason that you couldn't be, given some hard work and some time. It doesn't come without both of those ingredients. Just keep at it. You'll get there. Your voice is not bad at all. You simply haven't the experience yet. Just my opinion. I couldn't make out a lot of the lyrics to the song, so not going to comment there. Thanks for sharing. Darin.

Thanks for the comments. I must admit I am a bit confused though. The vocals were actually run through Melodyne with pitch tracking set to 80% and the "snap to" option checked. It shouldn't be off at all except some timing issues (I had the timing resolution set wrong, so a few words were pushed off the beat. I should've linked the YT video. It has the lyrics in the description. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJIQwO5KIvM

+1 to the above comments - tone deaf? Not likely. I agree with Dan, it's got that FOS vibe happening. And very well. Not much to add to the mix, but I will comment on the Melodyne aspect - you can't always go by the pitch value shown, sometimes you have to take into account vibrato and swoops in and out of notes. Try using the two Pitch tools (second from left) to see if that helps. What I will also sometimes do is click on a note in Melodyne while playing the same note on a keyboard, just to be sure I'm in the ballpark - I'm never looking for perfection, just reducing the cringe factor.
