note time -

I'm trying to alter a particular note time - I notice when I do so, the note time jumps from around :959 to :000 (like 1:01:959 to 1:02:000) - it doesn't seem to allow me to assign a note time in between those - is there a reason for this or is there a way to fix it so I can maybe fix a time between those?  Or is it impossible to get closer?  Thanks for help.

This is likely because your "ticks per beat" setting is 960.  So just as a minute rolls over after 59 seconds, it's rolling over to the next beat at 959 ticks.  (Edited for wording) There is a setting in preferences to subdivide the beat into more ticks.

Your setting of 960 Ticks per quarter-note is already the highest resolution.
Preferences>Clock

If you have the need to shift "notes" in an even finer resolution, wait until you've finished your MIDI work and then convert it to audio.
Now you can move the resulted clip(s) around at sample level resolution, to i.e. fine tune the start of events.

Right, Klaus, thanks, I just discovered that, but thanks jf, put me in the right direction - too bad can't get closer in midi - Klaus, can you explain more about "sample level resolution?", what it is, etc, would be helpful (although at this stage I prefer to stay in midi) - thanks to you both.

At 100 beats per minute 1/960 ticks per quarter note is 0.000625 seconds (0.625 msec) resolution. That is the difference you are dealing with will only move the sound 0.625 msec earlier or later. That resolution should be more than adequate for most human listeners. How would you notate and play a 1/960 th note (actually a 1/4 X 1/960 = one three thousand eight hundred and fortieth note in 4/4)? Under what conditions is this making a difference for you?

At 44100 samples per second the resolution is 0.0000227 seconds (0.0227 msec) so moving the sound one sample would move it 0.0227 msec earlier or later.

Hi rir1,
if you zoom way into the waveform, you'll finally reach a level where you can't zoom in anymore, that's what I meant with "sample level resolution".

You can add Samples as a Time Ruler Format by clicking on the "+" button on the right side of the Time Ruler, so you can precisely move clips by one sample, if you want to go that accurate.

This would be the highest resolution or smallest step you can get.
