X3 Track Freeze Oddity

Never seen this before.

Freezing a soft synth returns a black clip with a gray line through the center.

The audio can be heard as expected but the visual clip is odd looking.

There is also a tiny icon next to the track icon but it is so small I can't tell what it is.

If the clip is selected you can see the wave pattern. Once you take it out of focus all you see is the gray line.

Bouncing the clip doesn't fix it.

Changing the clip color doesn't fix it.

Dragging the clip to form a new track DOES fix it and there is no tiny icon.

Hi. I have seen this before. IRRC, to correct it I just right clicked on the clip, Properties, and chose "recompute picture". I have not seen it lately, though.
    All the best.

Thanks Zargg. That's nice for you Platinum guys. Unfortunately X3 has no option for that. I just wonder what that little icon is telling me since I've never seen this issue before.

A feature request I'll make for a fly out description when hovering the mouse over any icon. The FX bin has one that equally baffles me.

Platinum added something very much like this with the Help module.

If I am not mistaken, the option to recompute picture has been in SONAR for years. I even think it was available in SONAR 4. But that might not be your issue.

I've looked high & low for it. No can find.

The icon looks like a microscopic snow flake when blown up.

Right-click the clip, select the last option "Associated Audio Files..."
There is a recompute option on the Associated Audio Files dialog.

Clearing the picture cache should force a recompute too.

Check color preferences for frozen tracks? Maybe it's "black on black" or similar

Found it. Thanks for that. However, "recomputed" & color pref's aren't the issue here.

So far, all other projects freeze synth clips properly. This one project is the only one affected (infected?) and it happens to all synths. Still, the fact that there is an icon with the black & gray clip makes me think Sonar is doing something it's designed to do. What??!? is the question.

The clip has 2 thin black lines on a black background where there should be a wave pattern. The thin gray center line is the stereo separator.

I was going to suggest an "Audio Scaling set too small" problem
    http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=EditingAudio.13.html

but that icon in the track header is very intriguing. I'm reviewing the online docs to see if I can find something about it.

The icon in the track header looks like an asterisk and must mean the track is frozen because when I open the Track Manager, there's an asterisk beside the piano (MIDI) icon on those tracks. However, not all frozen tracks have this.

I wonder if it would help if you posted a shot of the track header and property inspector with the frozen track selected. Maybe we'll find a clue there.

Normally when you freeze a track the (default) track icon turns blue to show it's frozen. In this case it does NOT turn blue. Instead you get the little asterisk beside it.

This may be a normal Sonar function that I've never noticed before but the clip changing black doesn't make sense.

Honestly, soens, at this point I'd contact Support. I know you're on X3 but they should still be able to support you - and there must be someone at Cakewalk who knows what this asterisk business is.

I'm really curious about the root cause.

Maybe some other users could verify if this is normal behavior for X3.
