Experiencing 'Delay' effect when trying to record a track
Hi All, I have already laid down 4 tracks and when trying to record an additional track I'm experiencing 'Delay' effect on the instrument Any idea how to get rid of this effect? Thanks JockStrat Ps I'm running the basic Sonar X1 LE programme

I would recommend reading up on latency and look up how to lower it with your audio interface.

The delay is a combination of the audio interface settings and PDC. Here is another thread I just replied to about PDC http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3434210 The delay can be avoided by using an audio interface with the ability to monitor directly from the interface instead of monitoring through the DAW. When monitoring through the DAW, the interface settings and PDC affect when the audio is heard.

Click on "ByPass FX" in the Control Bar. Does the latency go away? Then it is caused by a VST/FX plugin somewhere in your project. Typically, one of the linear phase EQ plugins, which require a fairly large "look ahead" buffer to operate.

This happens to me on occasion, and it's really a pain. I'll be moving along on a project, and then at some point, when recording a new audio track, the new recorded track becomes out of sync with the rest of the project. In my case, the newly recorded track usually jumps ahead one measure. I can see it when recording. While recording, the waveform is aligned correctly with the rest of the project. As soon as I hit stop on the recording, the waveform jump ahead one measure. If I drag it back to the correct position, it will play in sync. It's just a pain. I think Stickman is correct regarding the reason. It's probably a plugin that's causing the problem. To avoid this, I try to use as few plugins as possible during the tracking/recording phase of my projects. I'd love to see Cakewalk add a better way to identify these errant plugins. Maybe some kind of latency readout for each plugin, on the FX Bin, or some kind of color coding scheme which shows plugin latency, based on the look ahead reported. At least with this, you could see which plugins in the bins were causing trouble.

Thanks to you all for your posts, I really appreciate your help. Up till now, I've recorded only on my Boss multitrack recorder, and never had a problem. Being new to recording using the Interface and PC method, I'm still trying to work my way around this issue. The only thing plugged in to the Roland Tri Capture interface is my guitar. I still haven't been able to solve the problem though. Best to All JockStrat

It would help if you posted your driver settings for your interface. Are you running it in ASIO? What are your buffer settings? Also what effects or plug-ins are you using in your project? And how many tracks?

It's pretty standard to have these kind of issues when first trying recording with any DAW. There are many tutorials that tell you how to set things up. Most important is to make sure to use the latest and correct ASIO drivers for your interface. They need to have a version that is compatible with your OS. Then make sure this is set up in Sonars preferences. It should say ASIO mode, if not change it. And turn off input echo on the audio track your recording and use your interfaces direct monitoring feature. Also make sure your computer is optimized for audio.

Can you describe what you mean by a "delay effect"?
Is there a delay from when you play a note until hear it, or is it like a delay pedal, where you have repeats?
Also, as you are new to this, do you understand what people are referring to as "plugins"? i.e. effects, processors or instruments within the software.
Sorry if i am teaching your grandmother how to suck eggs, but I know I got very confused when i first started using a DAW, and people seemed to use a foreign language.

Hi Lads, Again thanks. jb101, the delay effect is that when the note is played, there is a delay of 'say' half a second until the note is heard, so latency/out of sync? I hold up my hand to being a 'novice' with the technological side of Inteface/PC recording, Daw, and how the system needs all to be in sync etc etc. However, I need to persevere and learn. Peace to you All JockStrat

You've got some good posts to start you off. Also, the term to use (and Google) is Latency. The time it takes for the signal to get from your guitar to the PC, processed, and sent back out through your monitors. Audio drivers and buffer settings will control this once they're set right.

Cheers Matt, Everyone be so helpful. The advice and comments will help me enormously. I have an album/s to record so this will help me get the system properly sorted and set up, hopefully do away with the snags, and glitches and let me concentrate on the music. Peace to All JockStrat Quote by Plato: Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.

Be sure to check the Manuel Offset. This is a very important setting in Preferences. If you set the forum filter to search back more than a few months (maybe "from the beginning?") there are old threads that explain how to set this.

BAse 57 - Manual offset- you should normally never have to tamper with this,, especially a new user. I think this is a simple case of not using direct monitoring at the interface. Most interfaces add latency so just don't use input echo unless your system is capable of under around 7ms or less.

Hello All, It appears that the 'sample rate' setting on the interface was set at 96k but sample rate was set at 44.1k in the Sonar operating programme on the PC. The default sample rate on the Sonar programme is 44.1k so it was a case of flicking the switch on the Tri-Capture interface to 44.1k On going through all the advice sent by you chaps, I am now a bit more 'savvy' Hopefully I can now concentrate on recording...legs crossed. Again, many thanks to you all. JockStrat Music is...
