anybody know anything about statue records?

i got an e-mail presumably from an A&R guy from Statue Records who wants to know if my record is available for licensing and distribution.

WT? I'm over my head here
i definitely don't want to get into some sort of vanity project.

i checked out the web site www.statuecords.com
and it has a certain appearance of real

presumably around since 1982, I figure if anybody I know would know anything it would be on this board.

    hey jan sounds interesting.

hope it pans out for you. however i would think you should check out as much as you can with them direct.

whats the deal?, do you retain the rights? is it going to cost you anything?

back in the UK you could sell a track for 1000 pounds sterling to a 3rd party label, but if it then went on to make $1,000,000 you certainly wouldN,t. you just got the one payment.

however other options i had incountered included retaining rights and a giving a 20% cut to the label that produced and distributed it.

personally I have never heard that labels but i don't buy much these days.

I checked the site (although your link is not working). seemed ok but not exactly an electronica place, so that did al least rasie a few flags for me.

anyway check it out slowly and carefully, and if it looks good you can always check it out with a music lawyer before commiting. and in my previous experience its always good to trust no one when it comes to money, cover all the angles and avoid future problems. don't let the stars get in your eyes with all that.

    good luck

i read most of the posts on the CD Baby thread

it's a blanket e-mail to lots of folks with sites up

you retain rights, but they get sole distribution rights
they'll produce CDs for you with reasonably quality audio and low grade art for about $3.00
they want $100 to put you on their site

then most participants pay for 50 - 100 CDs and most received as ordered, but some have not

    i'll pass
i need another 6 to 9 months of seasoning, before I'd even consider something like cafe press or soundclick CD marketing

I've heard nothing but bad from those who signed up. They do nothing for you.

I recieved an email from them, and even I thought the stuff I had on soundclick sounded like crap. I liked my songs, but knew I didn't know crap about recording and mixing, and posted the songs for critisism.

I posted the full correspondence on soundclick.

This appears to a ruse for them to make money pressing your CD, they offer do to absolutely nothing, and they told me they thought the contract also did me no harm.
    I passed.
