Tape effects in SONAR

So, I just watched 3 new videos from Sound On Sound about tape effects in Reaper..... Gotta say, I am jealous! Yes, I know, we have convoluted work-arounds to do this stuff but, man, it's so easy in these videos. Really wish Cakewalk would institute this in Platinum.

Good luck, I've been asking for varispeed for some time.

Reaper's implementation is among the best out there, really good stuff.

+1 for varispeed
I often play acoustik guitars at half speed as background instrument. A very special sound - and very easy with a tape machine.
I would also like to play midi instruments at half speed.

For those who want to know the workarounds:

Les Paul's Double-Speed Tape Trick
Variable Speed Techniques
Fine-Tuning Pitch Transposition
How to Change the Tempo of an Entire Project

Although it would be nice to be able to varispeed an entire project, 95% of what I need varispeed for is for speeding up or slowing down the two-track mix, or doing pitch+timbre changes on individual instrument tracks, so the workarounds take care of those needs.

Cool! So Varispeed makes any band sound like "The Partridge Family".

Lol sorry, just had to say it. I'd love Varispeed.

Like reaper, n-track has an on-the-fly varispeed slider with low artifacts.

Pitch can follow speed. Speed can follow pitch. Pitch can be locked.

I suppose we could import our Sonar project into Reaper, do our vari-speed stuff, then dump it back into Sonar. Just a PITA, though.

Re: Tape effects in SONAR 2016/07/24 07:05:51 (permalink)
There are certain elements I truly miss about recording to tape.
There are others I don't miss at all.

I Do miss:
-Vary speed. Many a great results were achieved using that knob.
-Tape saturation. pushing levels to achieve a nice compressed sound. what is digital clipping ?
-Back ups. What back up ? if your tape machine died, you still had a hard copy.
-Use your ears. not your eyes. I catch myself too often looking vs. listening. (but this can also be a +1)

I Don't miss:
-Tempo mapping. Record click track at 90BPM to Trk 2. Now count the clicks and Rec new at 120BPM to Trk 3.
-Editing. Do I even need to go there ? hope you have a sharp blade. (this is the +1)
-Having to purchase tape. Not only did this get expensive, it was a creative interrupter.
-FX. Limited number of FX was determined by what you had in the rack and amount of FX returns/Bus.
