Advice: Midi CCs etc

Maybe some of you can offer me some advice and point out some pitfalls before I get myself in trouble.

I am about to start a project where I will be using Platinum to program DMX lights for a band.

The band will be playing to a Sonar click track.  The track will carry all patch changes for the synths, and all the cues to the EFX, the instruments as well as the vocal EFX etc.  The instruments will be played live.

I have a device that reads midi note and CC commands and changes it to DMX to run the lights.  As I see it, CCs will be the way to go so that I can do fades etc.  Unless I am wrong (please tell me!), there is no way to do slow fades using note on/off.  The lights will either go on or off.  Or, will DMX be able to do fades following velocity?

If any of you have done a project like this and have any words of wisdom, including referrals to printed material on the internet, I would appreciate it.

I use a little interface called DMXIS from EntTec. It allows you to set scenes up, fade rates and plenty more. It's controlled as a vst from SPlat. I highly recommend it.

Sonar - Platinum (always up to date)
    PC - Dell XPS 13 7th Gen Intel i7, 500GB SSD, 16GB RAM, 2 x 27" HD monitors, connected via a D3100 DOCKING STATION.
    OS - Windows 10 x64
    Interface - Focusrite Scarlett 8i6, Yamaha MG12XU

Rack FX - TC Helicon Voiceworks Plus, TC Electronics M300
    MIDI - M AUDIO Keystation PRO 88, Focusrite Scarlett 8i6, Roland UM-ONE Mk 2, Yamaha MU100R

    Microphones - sE X1, AT 2035, Neumann TLM102
    Monitors - Yamaha NS7, ATH-M50 'Phones
